  • we are about to encounter similar problems with getting a new line, if BT can decide if there is a line there or not(been told on separate ocassions 2 different things) althought the letting said there was a BT line it lloks likely the £125 will have to be paid As out landlord is selling up we've been forced to look for anew home to rent our new landlord doesn't want cable as he was told it would make a large hole in the property. we failed to find any other service provider other than cable and BT that offered residential phone lines. so on top of all our othwer additional expenses for mvoign hosue we've now got this. As there was a cable box outisde our current home we decided to sign up for cable Tv, but as we had to sign up for 12 months we're now forced topay the remaining 6 months up front when we leave. at the time we had no plans to move home so 12 motnh contract was fine

I'm so stressed about it. I was told we would be billed as the engineer would bill them for putting in a line. Fair enough I thought (though through gritted teeth) then the engineer said there was no charge as he didn't have to do anything, but BT are still taking the money from us. I got so upset last night and couldn't sleep. I'm always watching what we spend and it's like just giving £125 away for nothing! I passed angry, this is just distressing me now :(

Welcome to the MSE forums bryan.azzopardi.

As the above was your first post, your comment lacks enough information to be able to answer.

Generally, any of the many firms now offering line rental could (or, more accurately, could pay Openreach to) install/reconnect a landline but most aren't willing to pay up front, and so they say they can't do so. Instead, they say things line, "You have to have an operational BT line" (a lie) and then offer to take over the line. That costs them £2.35 I believe - a lot less than the £103.40 or so Openreach would charge.

What are you hoping to achieve? What are your accommodation circumstances? Are the premises in a cabled area?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Hope you get it for free as you should.

There needs to be a complaints procedure outside BT to highlight this. I always used a site called FaxyourMP with good results when unhappy with injustices in UK. However this seems to have been replaced with this site http://www.writetothem.com/.

Or Ofcom who created this problem, though they will deny there is a problem, seemingly they are staffed by ex BT people.

  • I posted here recently as I was moving to a house where the BT phoneline had been ceased. I was told that the charge of £124.99 was across the board however much work was needed. This I accepted!

When the engineer came he said he had had to do mininal work and there would be a minimal charge, certainly not £125, he told me to wait 24hrs and then check with BT when his job record would have been uploaded onto the system.

This I did (rang 150), I was indeed told that there would be no charge at all due to the engineers report. Needless to say I was extremely happy. Until I received my bill yesterday that is - you guessed it the £124.99 is on the bill. I have phoned BT, I was told a supervisor would call me back this evening at an agreed time - I didn't get the call, I phoned again and I have been told that there is no way the charge will be removed.

I am waiting for a supervisor to call me before 10 tonight - is there anything I can do about this?

hi, sorry if this has been asked before, but I searched and couldnt get a result.

I was wth bt 4 years ago, and moved to telewest. I now want to go t sky, because long story short, Virgin Media who took over telewest, customer service stinks.

I phoned BT and they are saying a deffo £124.99 installation charge, but there is already BT boxes in the house, so why is this?

getting a bit annoyed. Sorry, but if BT wants customers then surely they should seriously look at thier prices and b competitive. Virgin only charges £30 for installation and that is for broadband cables (tv and internet) from underneath floors etc, so obviously BT are trying to make a quick and very greedy buck from people.

So go to Virgin then! I guess that it isn't an option for you though, otherwise you would not be complaining.

  • Don't know if this helps,
I've contacted Global telecom who stated they will install a bt phone line on my new build house for £75. All work completed by a bt engineer. Line rental with them £9.95. I'm hoping that this is the case.

Get them to check to make sure the line is dead and they dont just have it down as being dead. If they test it and it is still active (dial tone at there end) then you should get back to bt for free.
