  • Hi,

Might have already been mentioned but this is such a massive thread I don't have time to read it all.... so apologies in advance but can BT charge me £122 to reconnect my phone line I've had in my flat for 7 years with them that I've never asked to be DISconnected in the first place? I have discovered it isn't working today (only by chance as phoned up sky to add broadband and phone line package and they said my number doesn't exist and upon calling home I've realised that is correct!) could have been down a while as I never ever use it to make calls and don't receive on it either (always use my mobile for everything!!)

I asked why is my phone not a working line any more and was told they couldn't see that on their screen and all they could offer me today was to order a connection at £122, I asked if they would put me through to someone/anyone that could explain what was going on and why my phone is not working (but without my account number they couldn't even though could clearly see details on their screen re my name, account holder, address the phone number etc?!!!) Have paid BT by direct debit for years and not seen a paper bill so guess I'll just have to hunt someone paperwork down at home tonight from the depths of my office area. Has anyone else been randomly disconnected with no explanation then told they have to pay £122 to get their line back???? Am pretty

    No you won't if it's BT's error. It's a line fault.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    Hi fay66,

Just to clarify, you can place an order for the activation of the line up to 28 days in advance. Hope this helps.

    Cheers

just moved into rental flat. before doing so, called up BT and was told that they couldn't find a line in the property. Asked me to try calling 17070 on the line when I moved in and that would give me the phone number.

got in today. phone line has dial tone. called 17070 but couldn't get to grips with the menu options.

letting agent has contacted previous tenant to find out who line was with, but don't know how long that will take.

in meantime, can I assume that with a dial tone present, I won't be charged any connection fee?

if it's a BT line, can I actually get the line enabled through madasafish or post office (i'm on a 6 month lease for the flat so don't want to be tied to 12 month minimum phone contract if possible)?

Dial 17070 and LISTEN. There is no need to press any buttons/keys, the first thing you hear is, "This circuit is identified as ..... (telephone number given).

    Hi

I wonder if anyone can give me some advice on likely charges and/or whether I can take advantage of the free connection etc.

I have 2 phone lines coming into my house put in by previous owners.

The line that is connected is the oldest (prob 25+ years?)- it has the old LJ2/1A master socket and seems to have 2 joints in the old yellowing cable upsteam of this- one joint with 'chocolate block' terminal block! This is inconveniently positioned in the hall and when I have the filter and extensions connected it's a bit bulky and keeps getting hit with the hoover.
The second one is slightly newer and has what I think is a NTE5 master socket and comes in to my office.
I'm in the process of decorating and would like to do away with some of the horrible cable linked to the old master socket. Ideally I would like to swap the lines and use the one that comes in the office, and maybe do away with the plug in microfilter and have one of those dual ASDL faceplates. I realise I would probably need to put in some more extensions from this master socket
I assume only a BT engineer can do this ?
I also assume it could just be a case of him being able to change the connections in the box on the outside wall of my house?
Any idea what this would cost or if I could take advantage of the free connection offer, although at the moment my calls are through primus and not BT

    Thanks

    C

thanks. tried it and got 3 options that just kept cycling. something like. quiet test, xxx test or xxx down.

called BT again and they confirmed it's a bt line and no connection fee :)
  • if ther eis a BT line already in, you shouldn't have to pay it !..... i was with Talktalk and went to BT, no £70 connection fee, otherwise I would of left it !.

If you have a BT line, say I will leave it as talktalk (need BT line to go to talktalk ) say they have offered to do it for £50.... see what they say...

Nothing for free at all in anything !.......
  • i've been scanning this thread for the past few days now. I moved into my property on the 6th and there was a BT socket in the house, however it was dead. called BT just and managed to get the £122.50 connection charge waivered by signing up to the unlimited weekends call package which is £0 per month, plus the line rental. The BT on the phone was really useful, I just mentioned the "free new connection offer" and he sorted it right away for me. Only downside is the 18month contract, but can't complain and really happy with how smoothly it went.
