Ahhhh just checked your link Heinz and it shows the offer had been extended but had ended 30th September, I'll call BT tomorrow to see if they have extended it again.

    Thanks

PS going on line shows BT to say most people do not pay the connection charge providing there is a dialing tone there? Don't know if being with Talk Talk would fit this though.

Ignore that 30-9-09 end date. It has been extended at least until 31-12-09.

You're correct, a dial tone normally means a free connection (from TT it'll be called a 'return to donor') but you have the fallback of the BT offer if you need it.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

  • We're going to be moving to a new build, we were aware we had to pay £120 or thereabouts to connect. However, i've just rang bt to see what we have to do and have been told that because we're moving into temporary accommodation between moves (house isn't quite ready) then they can't freeze the account, they have to cancel. They want to charge £30.00 to get out of the friends and family deal and £31 to get out of our broadband package. Seems a bit unfair and wondered if there was any way of getting out of paying these charges, on top of the reconnection fee we'll have to pay.

You won't have to pay connection when you eventually reach the new build if you can agree to an 18 month contract and making 10 chargeable or inclusive calls on BT each month - see HERE (ignore the 30-9-09 end date shown there, the offer has been extended until at least 31-12-09).

Thank you, I did see that and I suppose we'd be eligible if we cancel these existing contracts, i'd have to look at the other things we'd be signing up for.

We have a pretty good deal with BT at the moment, i'm not really bothered about the connection charge, i'm more annoyed at the fact that they're trying to charge us for cancelling when we aren't really cancelling IYSWIM

    It's the principle :rotfl:

    Hi Woody's Girl,

From reading your thread I do not see any reason as to why we can not postpone the installtion of your BT line in your new home. We could delay the new order up to a maximum of six weeks, so if you move in by then there wouldn't be any need to cancel your BT account.

As Heinz says you can also opt for an 18 month contract to get free installation as long as you make 10 chargeable/inclusive calls per month.

If you wish you can PM me your details to btcare@bt.com and I'll have a chat with you to answer any questions you have.

    Regards,
    Jon.

Dont sky do a free installation of a telephone line and put the line in from the exchange the same way BT do.

My sister had the same problem with BT wanting 125 installation as she wanted the line for adsl. Ended up getting the lot from sky with free installation.

Sky can connect a phone line yes, but they dont appear to offer free connection anymore, unless you still can get dialling tone.

BT unlike Sky dont insist on you taking their TV service to get a phone line,;) and like Sky they will also connect you for free if you can get dialling tone (12 month contract).
