can anyone help me? i am in a new build COUNCIL HOUSE, there was a line going to the house before it was renovated ,who is liable to pay for replacement? i haven't got lots of money like those people that have purchased their houses themselves so i'm not trying it on, please help

I'm afraid you'll be responsible for the reconnection costs (unless your landlord will pay, which I doubt).

However, the post immediately above this one (and some earlier ones) should help you. You need to persuade BT to reconnect the house for £29.35, as in the last post. They may not give you it immediately - you need to persist.
  • thankyou doc N will try that and see where i get!
  • Haha!

With the kind help of you fine fellows, I've just been on the phone to BT. Literally, just put the phone down.

My situationis a bit ropey. I'm moving into a building that was renovated for Key workers (ie police, fire, education) in Manchester. All the apartments have BT lines physically installed but not all of them have actually been used. Which means I may have to pay the hefty £122.33.

So, after trying to sort this out with the BT moving team and getting rather angry, I turned to the web. Found this forum, called BT and ended up with the same result but a bit more information and insight.

The nice young lady told be that BT have a grading scale for phone lines. Gold, silver and bronze - gold being fine and dandy and all connected. My line status is silver possibly due to it never being used. Therefore, if I need to get it connected (possibly as little as flicking a switch at the exchange) it's going to cost me £122.33.

Now this is the good bit. She told me to go to the place I'm moving in to and take a phone with me. Connect the phone, see if there's a dial tone and try dialling 17070. If I get a number I can call back on Monday and ask for the address matching team and give them the number - then connection should be free. Alternatively, if I don't get a number I call back and ask for the Customer Options team who may be able to give me an offer on the connection fee. So, with any luck I'll get a reduction or get it free.

I shall try to post my progress Monday evening of Tuesday.

    Thanks for the help!

Thanks for correcting me. I always thought that the 1571 answer service is free? Hell, I am confused. I wish BT terms, conditions and whatnot would be easy to understand. I am sure I wasn't told over the phone that I had to make a set amount of calls for the cheaper installation.

I find everything on the BT site comfusing especially regarding charges. Even going to their site to find out how much a minute to call a certain type of number you go round and round in circles and then give up.
I think they try intentionally to make it as confusing as possible.

It's like trying to find something in Yellow Pages it's always under a category that you would never think of.

Store the following in your favorites (sic) then. It covers everything except 01, 02 and international calls.

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Again, just got off the phone from BT Home movers and SUCCESSFULLY managed to get the reduced £29.35 reconnection fee! BINGO!

From what I can gather from the lady I spoke to is that you must quote the fee in order to receive it. Just like some offers where you must quote a reference number - although BT don't seem to be advertising this!

So, if you're moving, just call BT home movers and say - as I did - I've done some research and apparently I can have the £122.33 connection fee reduced to £29.35. BINGO-BANGO! They'll give it to you.

Thanks to all of you kind folk for the info...you've just made this man EXTREMELY happy!
  • philkershaw, and others (like me) who got this offer - just remember to obey the rules. I just this afternoon got a letter from BT containing details of the offer. I was expecting the bit about having to make 10 calls per month, but they also threw in a 'nasty' surprise that I HAVE to make at least 1 chargeable call per month as well. This is the first mention of this - despite wrangling with BT over 9 separate phone calls to get the line installed. Perhaps this is part of the 'Unlimited Weekends' package terms, rather than those of the '£29.35 Installation' offer.

  • A question about the 10 calls thing: it says 10 chargeable or inclusive calls per month, and my contract started 19th March. Does this mean I have to make my 10 before 1st April (ie each calendar month); or before the 19th April (each full contract month)? Any ideas? TIA.

I'd play safe and make ten short 01 or 02 calls next weekend (when they're free).

Takeaways are handy for, "Sorry, I misdialled" calls.

  • Thanks Heinz - somebody posted an 020 number for the speaking clock earlier in this thread. I'll give that number a call (x10) at the weekend. Might be worth me ringing BT cust. service to find out what they mean exactly about 'monthly'.
