I applied online to have line connected. Got and e-mail which quoted £122.33 if I went on a 12 month contract or £28.36 if I went on an 18 month.

Think its obvious which one I've gone for

BT is the only line provider which must allow subscribers to use any and all indirect access calls providers (18185 etc. and the many and various 0844/0871 gateway providers) and a CPS calls provider.

Officially, it should not matter which of the 3 BT calls plans you are on, you should still be able to CPS your calls too. However, I've heard of BT being 'obstructive' when someone on anything other than the Unlimited Weekend Plan tries to sign up for a CPS calls provider.

10 charged or inclusive calls need to be made every month over the 18 months to retain the offer. If you switch to cps you can overide with 1280 but if you change to wholesale calls provider (sky/talk talk) you cant overide so will have to pay full connection on a later bill from BT
  • Dear Savers,

I moved into a new place 3 weeks ago. This flat is a conversion of a former business unit. I know that the previous tenant has been using talk talk services here, which are due to expire shortly. Now, the funny thing is that the tel socket has a BT logo on it... My aim is to get O2 bb, so I need a BT line first, even though I would be perfectly happy without a landline. (Unfortunately, I do not live in a cabled area).

When I phoned BT, they are trying to charge me the full £122 reactivation charge saying that the line in the flat is not a BT line and I am very upset about that, as it would be literally a 5 second job at the exchange point to reconnect it!

How could I get them to lower this charge ? What do u think of getting the Post Office to reconnect my line and then get a line rental contract with BT ? Could this be a more cost-effective solution? Please help me :(

Many thanks in advance & regards

Whoever you get to reconnect the line will advise there may be a charge if the line has been stopped for a while. They have no idea until survey is done what the status of the line is or if the number has been re-allocated to another property.
The charge is levied by Openreach, £88 + VAT and is the same for any provider you choose to use although they in turn will charge the end-user whatever they like.
The Phone Co-op charges £113.85 - http://www.thephone.coop/residential/linerental/installreconnect.html , not advocating them but their price list is very informative.
Rule of thumb is if there's a dial tone and dialling 17070 gives the number and other features it should be free.

BT will lower the charge if you agree to an 18 month contract with them
  • Hi Folks,

Thank you for your suggestions - very helpful. Unfortunately, BT don't want to lower this charge even on 18 months contract! They are justifying that by saying that the previous landline was registered as business and they have to convert it to residential... Still cannot imagine them spending on the job more than 5mins...
Any other ideas ? I am really dying to have O2 BB, as they have the strongest signal in my area but am I ever going to get a BT line ?

The enginner said that the line in my house didnt need reconnecting, but the box in the house was a bit dodgy and she put some notes on the account to this effect. I then phoned the Indian Call Centre and they said because even though the line was still connected because the engineer had to do some work in the house I still had to be charged the full amount. I just put the phone down and am now gonna write a letter to see if I can get it waived or just mention that other people are getting charged a lesser amount and what are they going to do about it.

We're still confused with BT over our new contract.

We had the £29.99 reconnection with an 18 month contract and the Unlimited Weekend calls plan. We were originally told we would have to make 10 calls per month and these could be inclusive of the weekend plan.

Our "welcome" letter stated we would have to make one call per month and it made it look as this had to be a chargeable call.

Because there are lots of different variations on this thread about the number of calls needing to be made, OH rang BT this morning to clarify this. The young lady got our account up and said that it showed there were no conditions regarding calls at all and she told him to "make all your calls at the weekend". Of course, he didn't think to get this confirmed in writing  although he has made a note of her name and the date/time of the call if there are any problems in the future.

It seems very peculiar to me that there are so many people who have been told so many different things regarding this particular plan.

You think £125 is bad. I've got to pay £125 connection to BT and £120 cancellation fee to Virgin because I'm moving to a new build. Bloody robbers!
  • I've just been on the phone to Sky. If you take their See, Speak, Surf package with either Movies or Sky Sports they will connect your line for free. After one month you can lower your channel subscription to the minimum incurring no penalties.
