BT Connection Charges (merged threads)

We got quotes from sky which said that they would cover the BT connection fee if we moved from cable. I called back a couple of hours later to book it and they refused to honour it. After some discussion they then said it would be a credit on the sky bill after a couple of months and refused to put anything in writing. Sticking with cable methinks! For everything else, there's MSE :T0

My neighbour who has a BT line to the house but has always been with cable for her phone service has been quoted £125 to reconnect to BT. Is this right or have BT assumed there is no line to the property?0

If there's already a BT line in the house, the £125 will be wrong. You're right - they must have assumed that there's no existing line.0 -

My property (just moved in) has a BT line, but from what I was told the line is disconnected at the exchange after a certain amount of activity. The £125 they wanted from me was necessary as an engineer would need to visit my property.
The thing I find funny is that the last tenants had BT, and I am still getting bills from BT in their name. :rolleyes:0 -

From the BT website:-
"If the premises has had telephone service from BT in the recent past, and the wiring and socket is undamaged and the line still has dialling tone, a connection charge may not be payable. Where there is no suitable BT telephone line available in the property a connection charge of £122.33(Inc VAT) may apply. This fee covers engineering work in the exchange or customer's property in order to connect the line. BT will advise of a connection charge at the time the order is placed however this will be confirmed after checks have been carried out against the details of your property, to ascertain the condition of the wiring and sockets."0 -
My bro has just moved into a rented house, he rang bt to find out if he could get phone service they said it looked like the house wasnt connected.
However he tried a phone in the socket and there is a tone, he thinks maybe the previous tenant had sky (theres a dish outside) but cant get much info from the estate agent. will he have to pay full connection fee to bt
or is it better if he just goes for a sky package (cos he needs to get phone and broadband anyway)

When we moved to our new house last October Talk Talk had ownership of the line. I rang BT to get the line back to them, in our name and she kindly told me that as the line and connections were all in place it would be free but i couldn't book it until the 17th as talk talk still had the line. I duly rang back after this to book and was told by a different girl that IT would cost me the £125 or so to get the line back to BT. I half-heartedly protested re this charge but she was adamant i had to pay it. I said that as i only wanted the line for broadband and if they insisted the charge applied, they could kindly stick it as Mr Branson offers me a cable point outside my house....You'd think that in this economic climate that a company like BT would be only too glad for the income but apparently they have so much money that they don't need mine...Oh well, their loss.0

hi can any one advise me what to do,or where to complain,
i am on benefits due to illness and was shocked at the cost of reconnection fee,the post office was the only other option and was slightly cheaper however bt has the basic option so my line rental was only 13 pounds a quarter, however the barrier was the connection fee, when i called them they said i could pay it off in small installments of a couple of quid each week, this was great so i signed up,then i got my bill for the whole ammount in one go,so i called them i was on the phone for a hour gettin passed from one department to the other and in the end i had to give up,(no manager to speak to) i have emailed them in complaints and got a response and she even called me all that resulted in was telling me to call basic department,so i did and was told they would call me back, who can i complain to and what can i do,no way can i pay this off in one go,all i want is what was agreed,i wouldnt have gone with bt if it wasnt for the paying it off in installments,0
