BT Connection Charges (merged threads)

Anyway I spoke to BT today and they didn't have any problems with giving me the £29.35 connection fee, on the premise that I took an 18 month contract AND made at least 30 calls on the line every quarter
When I arranged for my £29.35 connection I was told it that it was conditional on an 18 month contract AND at least 5 calls per month. As I hadn’t heard this before I queried it. The sales person then said that 5 calls a month was what they had been told and asked if I had seen something different!
Although 5 calls a month may be reasonable I feel that the vagueness of the contract is unsatisfactory and I would like clarification about this.
The letter confirming my connection mentions the 18 month contract but says nothing about requiring any monthly calls. I have also searched BT’s terms and conditions and found nothing.

I'm totally confused with BT.
We took up the £29.35 reconnection charge special offer, had the Unlimited Weekend Plan and a minimum 18 month contract, and our letter confirming this states that
"...Unlimited Weekend Plan, which means that you get inclusive calls at the weekend (for up to an hour) to UK landlines. You can redial as many times as you like to avoid going over the hour mark but you must make at least one chargeable call per month"
So I presume that they want us to make one call we pay for each month. OK no problem with one call a month, we'll make it short!
It goes on to say
"Please note by taking this special offer you are committing to make at least 30 chargeable or inclusive calls in every three month period for those billed quarterly or 10 chargeable or inclusive calls per month if you are billed monthly."
So those 10 calls per month can be the ones we have included with our Unlimited Weekend Plan so we don't have to pay for those 10 as long as we make them at the right time!
We signed up for paper-free billing to get the cheaper line rental of £10.27 instead of £11.50, yet our bill has come in with the £11.50 being charged, in fact we've paid in advance for the next two months at that rate. A telephone call to them and they confirm we are registered for paperless billing and it should show on the next bill. We'll have to keep an eye on it and make sure we're refunded what we have overpaid this time. I can see this getting complicated!I was told it that it was conditional on an 18 month contract AND at least 5 calls per month. ........... Although 5 calls a month may be reasonable I feel that the vagueness of the contract is unsatisfactory and I would like clarification about this.
It seems that we're all being told different things. Assuming you've double checked your letter from BT and can find no reference to this, I would give them a call to clarify your situation (take the person's name and make a note of what was said in case you need to refer back to it in future). Maybe ask if they can confirm this in writing to you.0 -
Bizarely, they said 9 chargeable calls to me!
BT engineer here this morning - in theory...3 hours to go to hit the 8-1 booking!0 -

Good point. The 'welcome' letter says nothing about this, and seems not to refer to any terms and conditions, though accepting the offer will almost certainly have involved accepting them - whatever they are!
There doesn't seem to be anything preventing you from using other providers such as Primus or 18185 for your calls - unless anyone else knows better?
And is there anything stopping you from accepting a 12 month tie-in to get free evening calls as well as the free weekend ones? You're locked in for 18 months anyway, so accepting 12 months isn't a problem.0 -

We haven't yet moved into the house we've had the line reconnected to but are with BT at our present house and we use 18185 with no problems.0 -
BT is the only line provider which must allow subscribers to use any and all indirect access calls providers (18185 etc. and the many and various 0844/0871 gateway providers) and a CPS calls provider.
Officially, it should not matter which of the 3 BT calls plans you are on, you should still be able to CPS your calls too. However, I've heard of BT being 'obstructive' when someone on anything other than the Unlimited Weekend Plan tries to sign up for a CPS calls provider.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -

Thanks. I'm assuming this doesn't breach the terms and conditions of the reduced charge £29.35 connection fee for a new house?
I wouldn't have thought so. There's no mention in the Ts and Cs of not using these other call providers.
Our current set up is BT line rental, Virgin non-cable for broadband with free evening and weekend calls, and we use 18185 for daytime calls to 01 and 02 numbers which are 0p per minute with a 5p connection charge, call time up to 60 minutes. So we don't actually use BT for any calls at the moment, just the line rental and we've had no problems.
When we move we've got the BT line rental on this 18 month contract with free weekend calls and we have to make one chargeable call per month (I think) plus 10 calls per month which can be from the free weekend package. We will move the Virgin broadband over to the new house (we've just arranged a new contract as ours runs out in a couple of weeks but have yet to arrange the move) so we'll still have the free evening and weekend calls with Virgin. We'll just carry on the same with 18185 in the daytime but make sure we make the correct amount of calls through BT which looks as though it's one chargeable call per month which is going to be "Hello, Goodbye" to a family member at their minimum cost and the other 10 inclusive ones if necessary.
Hope you've followed that, I think I've lost myself :rotfl:0 -
Just Phoned BT to tell them I'm moving in a couple of weeks. They quoted £120 connection charge. I asked if I could have the £30 offer. They immediately said "Yes, no probs, that'll £29.99 connection charge instead then".
Thankyou!!!0 -
