as fannyhill says this is too true you do get different answers when you speak to another person at Bt so i will explain when charges will apply.

The only time you will be charged to reconnect is ..
    1. ceased line (you may have a socket but external connection no longer exists in green cab or exchange) so full charges apply

Can you tell me whether this is possible in my situation, given the previous tenant had a phone line setup and moved out under one month prior to my arrival?

    thanks

Also, whether this tells me something about my situation or not:
The two extension phone lines throughout the flat are both dead. I checked the connections inside and they match those in the master socket. What could the problem be now?

Its quite strange given all the previous tenants, no-one cared?

If you get a dialling tone from the main socket, dial 17070 and see what you get. If there is an answer giving you the phone number, then it isn't ceased, and you can get it restarted by your chosen supplier.

The dead extension problem will have no bearing on this.

i paid a £124.99 connection fee to BT in July when i moved in, they say the reason is because the previous tenant only paid them line rental and had her calls with TALKTALK.

They told me an engineer would be out on 10th july but an engineer did not turn up, infact the phone line came on automatically on 8th july.

i think this is a complete rip off, are BT allowed to do this? any advice would be appreciated. kind regards
  • Sounds like a similar situation too me, I'm not sure how we find proof of what they actually did.

The line didn't 'come on automatically' it came on when the engineer attended the exchange, disconnected it from the Talk Talk equipment and connected it to the BT equipment.

    That's what you paid for.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

There are 2 recent ones in this thread, where you insist only cable users can take advantage of the £30 connection offer. Posts #1020 + 1026.

Though you contradict yourself in post #1022.

    You don't answer the questions:
Are you posting in an official BT capacity? And will BT stand by things you say here?

And you do promote BT, (without declaring your interest):
We have some great deals for cable customers
