I was advised that fabricc conditioner breaks down the plastic/rubber coating the put on the ends of the wires causing the sharp end to be able to tear the fabric

No tumble drying and proper fitting (done at bravissimo) worked for me. I used to always be unconfortable and get the wires poking out quite quickly before this. I only get bruising now when I'm due for a period and my boobs swell up :(. I tried handwashing for a while then found all my nails were splitting so use a cooler machine wash instead.

Hope its ok to bump this discussion up as I was wondering and hoping some1 had any other ideas of how to fix the wire when it comes out of the side of your bra or when it breaks/snaps ?
:think:Any new & different ideas/suggestions to the ones already:think::think:been suggested and discused during this forum::think:
    1. Get a proper fitting, to ensure correct size bra is being worn.
    2. Keep sewing up the sides.
    3. Handwashing or if you have to use washing machine, place in wash bag/pillow case and tie tightly and wash on a cool wash.
    4. Do Not Use Fabric Conditioner.
    5. Dip the sharp ends of the underwire in 3 coats of clear nail polish to form a little bobble at the end of the wire, then use a small amount of bias binding tape to patch the hole where it's stuck through. (use it like a patch) hand sew a piece to one end of the wire tape, push the wire out of the way, and wrap the binding as neatly as possible over the hole and over to the front of the bra, and sew it down.

  • I don't really have anything to add regarding how to fix the bras, but I was told to do this in the excellent bra fittting shop I went to to stop it happening. My bras are costing up to £50 to £60 each for a nice one, and was determined to keep them good, so I asked for advice, and told the woman that I don't do hand wash.

When you are preparing for your shower, remove your bra, take it in the shower with you, give it a quick wash with shower gel, then rinse well, job done in 2 minutes no problem. Leave to dry overnight, but not on a radiator. Great results, no machine repairs. My teenage daughters do this now too.

And if they are poking out.. don't wear them!! My cousin got a massive infection in her breast almost to the point of having to have her breast removed because the wire poked straight into her breast tissue and she had to go to A&E to pull get out of her flesh!!!

I had another friend who felt one poking in her throat on the bus.. so pulled out this wire.. 44H cup!!! Can you imagine.. well it was too big to put in her bag so when she got off the bus she left the wire on the seat!!!!

  • I've only ever had 1 break - in a really old bra. I really do think it's down to the fit. I've got small boobs, large band size. can be a nightmare to find something that fits.

You aren't supposed to wear them until they fall apart, doesn't do your boobs any favours, you've got no support then. Once they start to go, get a new one!

There's a free downloadable (if that's a word) ebook about bra's It's called The Bra Book 8 easy steps to your true bra size. It's really informative about cups, band widths and length, straps, bra construction etc I found it very interesting. It's from figleaves.com
  • Hi, Can anyone recommend a good way to repair bras when the underwires start to poke out?
They are the correct size and I could sew the hole over but is there a way to make it more secure and comfortable.
    Thanks

    Hi,

If the bobble on the end of the wire is missing you can buy replacement wires from habadashery shops or market stalls. If you sew it up with the bobble missing it will poke through again more quickly. Or you could take the wire out of an old bra. Rather than just sew up the hole, sew a piece of ribbon or synthetic fabric over to strengthen it. When you wash them, put them in a pillowcase in the machine. Life is too short to handwash bras:D
