Ok Ok.
Yes I may never put things across very well. Sorry!
I have flaws in most of my posts since the opener. Again my bad!
If you take a new computer user they will learn what ever you put in front of them. It could be an abacus with a touch screen for all I care.
The point of the whole thread and nothing but is when you give advice which everyone will agree needs to be relevant.
I am not saying old dogs can't learn new tricks but novice windows users could have been using it for 10 years, a platform change will be confusing.
Linux has its strong points, using it to boot from CD a as diagnostic tool is a great tip. Where Linux or Mac help is useless is to say install Linux\Buy a Mac without offering real help with the original problem or quantifying the suggestion of platform change.
Apart from piddling people off with my misinformed postsI have at least achieved the point of hopefully making people think about how relevant their advice is and quantifying it.
My title may have been heavy handed but after reading about the 5th Linux install one line help post the other night I was a little peeved.
I for one appreciate all the posters on here and the forum for the help and advice they give out. Can we all agree to play together and make peoples time here productive, fun as well would be great. Now can I mis-spell Linux as Linus and get away with it.....doubt itNew PV club member. 3.99kW system. Solar Edge with 14 x 285W JA Solar panels. 55° West from south and 35° pitch.0 -
Perhaps post 7 here: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=2092305 explains what the OP meant.
A novice is having issues burning a CD (ironically in OS X, but the principle of recommending a new OS to fix a simple issue is the same!), so someone recommends trying Linux... very helpful.

I noticed that BillScarab (see above) gave that poster a "Thanks".

And if you're fed up with windows, try a Mac. It's great quality in my view, even if it isn't for me. But then, I have niche requirements.
Windows and Mac are not the same, one is an OS the other is a computer.
If your fed up with Windows thats when you go to Linux. you don't throw out your Stereo or iPod just cause your fed up with the MP3 or CD inside.Survey earnings total 2009 £417, 2010 £875, 2011 £5740 -

I certainly did. I thanked them because it made me smile. I read it as an ironic post referencing this thread. If the person who posted it was actually serious then they're crazy. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -

But if you're so fed up with it that you've thrown your computer out of the Window...  :wall:
...buying a Mac to replace it would suddenly make the whole world seem wonderful. :smileyhea

Given that most Mac users were once Windows users, and Mac OS X has a larger market share than Linux, it would seem that most people who are fed up with Windows do indeed pursue such a course of action.0 -
Well I must not be as rich as those that can just can a just replace a new PC with a Mac just cause I not like the OSSurvey earnings total 2009 £417, 2010 £875, 2011 £5740

No but you might throw it out if the controls started to malfunction or it didn't support functions you need. You may be able to compare a CD or MP3 in a "stereo" with an application (but it'd be tentative); but not an operating system. The OS of a "stereo" would be more akin to the the solid state or embedded firmware; displays, functions and so on.
Personally I know people (and companies) that have switched from Windows to Mac OS, but none to Linux, although I do work with people running Linux mainly for web purposes. And for balance, I also know one company who switched from Mac OS 9 in the late 1990s to Windows.0
