The reason linux has not done better in the marketplace is because it's still way too user unfriendly. Very rarely do you download a program and just click and install, usually you have to compile this and download that to get this one to work with that... etc, etc.
take a look at the .deb files for ubuntu/debian. often a one click install and it should install any dependencies automatically via synaptic
Oh and the fact that 50% of linux is done through a command prompt!! welcome to 1993!
Its often just a case of copy/pasting the command into the terminal. its often quicker and minimizes the risk of newbies making mistakes

Ever heard of package managers like synaptic????

I haven't used the commandline in about 2 years, unless I actually wanted to. I would say you 100% need to actually use linux before making stuff up like that.
I have tried many times using Linux. My stumbling block was getting help from the so called Linux experts. If I have a specific problem with windows I can Google the problem and come up with dozens of Win Experts who will put me on the right track. Not so with Linux -- Google a Linux problem and you go round in circles trying to find a solution. Guys who talk loud about using linux are geeks who want to show off and nothing more.
Funny any problem I've had had a solution by googling it. !!!! out of talk???
The only Linux I use these days in on my eBook reader.
You'll be using it more than you actually know.

Overall whole post is wrong, well done.

I have a question. Since we have strayed from the thread.
Can anyone put the main OS' that have been discussed into order 1 being the best, 3 the worst, taking into account most complete out the box, ease of use, cost, available software (not just specialized apps), physical machine cost, user training(cost/availability), security and any other factor you think is relevant.
My order would be going by my own perception, not looking for your opinions of my views just you own perspectives: -
    1) Windows
    complete out the box 2
    ease of use 2
    cost 3
available software (not just specialized apps) 1
physical machine cost 1.5(uses more resources than a Linux machine)
    user training(cost/availability) 1
    security 3
    2) Mac
    complete out the box 2
    ease of use 1
    cost 2
available software (not just specialized apps) 2
    physical machine cost 3
    user training(cost/availability) 2
    security 1
    3) Linux
    complete out the box 3
    ease of use 3
    cost 1
available software (not just specialized apps) 3
    physical machine cost 1
    user training(cost/availability) 3
    security 2
