    I disagree with the OP.

Did you read their first post?

    It seems reasonable enough.

They aren't saying "don't recommend Linux".

To restore balance to my earlier post, I do understand Oneday's point about why change everything just to fix a windows problem.

I don't shove Linux down peoples' throats. I agree that a lot of people need the comfort blanket offered by Microsoft systems. They can walk into PC world and get it fixed for a fee.

And if you're fed up with windows, try a Mac. It's great quality in my view, even if it isn't for me. But then, I have niche requirements.

My problem with the OP was the implication that there is a right way and a wrong way. Why should someone have a struggle with a massive product like Vista when all they may want is something which gets them onto the net, plays their music, and lets them message their friends. If they can expect this level of functionality from their phone, why shouldn't they get it from a desktop/lappy?

    Vive la difference. :)

(ps I don't hate Microsoft, but I don't have much time for that plonker Steve Ballmer)

You've explained why you recommend Linux, not why you would feel justified in recommending it to fix a problem with Windows.

You don't think it's reasonable to fix the problem itself?

I wouldn't, dont be stupid. Reread what I said.

Besides which when has anyone here recommended linux cos someone cant install a mouse driver???

I read what you said. Maybe you should re-read the OP as you clearly didn't going from your post.

You obviously don't spend much time here as that (the mouse scenario) is exactly the sort of problem the thread is about.

    Quote myself:
With linux I can instantly diagnose a software or hardware issue, something which can be very difficult to do. That is very useful! With linux I can scan a windows hard drive when its not in use and find things that can hide from security software whilst the OS is in use. That is very useful. Not to mention I only need to pay for hardware when building a new computer.

You obviously haven't re-read my post so heres what I said for you:
I will keep recommending linux when and if I see fit.
I've read the ops post and its flawed, as I pointed out in the rest of my post. But obviously my minute 1200 posts mean I'm not spending enough time here so...

Anyway I answered all the below:

Computers to the uninitiated are complicate tools that only need to do what they want and nothing more.

What you forget is that new computer users have no preference over which OS they use and they will learn what ever is put in front of them.

Novice windows users are generally ignorant, this is not their fault, not everyone wants to be a computer expert and they dont like change. Therein is the problem. But they are able to follow instructions as is proven here everyday.

So why do people keep recommending a form of Linux to people who wouldn't have a clue as to what to do with it.
"Stop recommending linux" is like saying "Stop telling people to clean viruses" because the assumption is that the person recommending linux will not be able to provide help getting it running in the same way as Alienrik and others including myself help novice users clean up their computers doing stuff they do not understand because they can follow instuctions.

You are implying the equivalent of this: Replying to a thread titled "Help I have a virus" with "Well get rid of it then" and nothing further.

You imply that removing a virus/solving windows problems are less complicated that installing and running linux which it is not, provided you have the support. Basically what you're saying is if you have a windows problem you have tons of support but if you try linux you're on you're own bucko. Which is patently not true.

You also imply that people are incapable of learning something new and would not be interested in any case.

Not to mention half the programs utilised to clean up windows the novices here dont have a clue how to use.

    And below well...

People come on here to ask advice on what they have and know, stop confusing the issue by suggesting the unknown.:T
The above is a blatant contradition, if they knew they wouldn't ask for help. Most of what they get told is unknown to them. Guess compofix and hijackthis is out then??

No wait they're not because they are guided though what they need to do, obviously this can never ever ever happen with linux its impossible!!!!

The majority of software available is designed to run on a Windows platform.

    And this is debatable.

    Wheres mention of a mouse????????????????????????????????????????
