Homemade Beauty Treatments

  • I could post this in Health & Beauty, Oldstyle AND Geen & Ethical!

After deciding that putting deoderant sprays like Lynx on an area so dense with pores - i.e. the armpits - is actualy quite horrid, I decided to try out the Crystal Spring deoderant. It's basically a roll-on made from some form of crystals (soda I think, but that's not the point of my post), I've only bought it today so I'll let you know how it goes! But basically it doesn't contain any of the horrible chemicals that the sprays do - just imagine the alcohol, aluminium, silica, petroleum, and all other nasty stuff you are putting on your sensive bits, where you then absorbe this stuff into your body, and clog your pores. And we pay for the pleasure!

Anyway, I've also been thinking about the hair gel I use daily, and it was no real shock to find that my VO5 gel contains all sorts of plastic, vinyl and silicon. So I had a search for some alternatives.

I found one at greenpeople.co.uk which seems very nice (although there isn't a full list of ingredients) but it's £9.99 a tube! Ouch. So the oldstyle in me started to think...I wonder if I could make some myself!

I have found a recipe on t'interweb, and am planning to give it a go. It goes as follows: (obviously, I'm not necessarily advising anyone to use it as I haven't even tried it myself yet, it's just for your information)

Hair Gel for All Hair Types
    2 tablespoons of flax seeds
    1 cup of water
One vitamin E capsule (optional, good for dry, damaged or chemically-treated hair)
1 tablespoon of rosewater or 3 drops of your favorite essential oil
Unlike the commercial varieties, this styling gel also acts as a conditioner, so it is particularly good for dry hair. Combine the flax seeds and water in a small saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil. Remove from heat and allow mixture to cool for 30 minutes. Strain out the seeds and stir in the vitamin E oil (if using) and the rosewater or essential oil. Pour the mixture into a clean jar and store it in the refrigerator. It will keep for up to one month.

Doesn't sound too bad eh? My hair gel usualy only lasts a month anyway. Now to just hunt down a regular supply of flax seeds and rosewater! (not the most blokey of stuff to keep, but then neither is making your own hair products!)

If anyone has any suggestions, opinions or experiences then I would very much like to hear!

    Cheers,
    Joe

I think I should try it.....but can any one suggest me that how do I prepare a home made treatment for hair straightening.. is there any home made treatment for this so that I can straight my hairs..:)

My skin has become increasingly sensitive to shop bought moisturisers - even the ones that are supposed to be gentle. Here's what I have used in over a year now and my skin is looking great on it.

    1/2 teaspoon of beeswax
    1 tsp coconut oil
    1 tsp shea butter
    2 tsp olive oil
(a few drops of essential oil)

I melt the beeswax first in a pot inside a pan of boiling water. Then add coconut oil - then shea butter last. I top up with olive oil and then set in fridge. I use it on my face and body. I also omit the beeswax and use it heavily on my hair as a prepoo treatment (wash out and condition) leaves my hair very soft and shiny. Then a tiny, tiny amount rubbed through my palms for the ends of my hair to moisturise.

Deep hair conditioner (this is amazing particularly for damaged/dry hair)
a blob of honey (briefly warmed and melted)
a blob of conditioner (any cheapo will do)
    a blob of aloe vera
a teaspoon of melted coconut oil

wash hair, apply mixture and wrap in either cling film or plastic bag, then wrap in a towel and keep on as long as possible - longer the better. Then rinse off.

These are fabulous tips and recipes for natural goodies :)

I was wondering what I could make for my hair as a natural conditioner as I'm trying obviously to cut down on the conditioners that I'm buying at the moment, or at least to make them go further! I currently use Liz Earle shampoo (which I will continue to buy and use as it's perfect for me and lasts a long time per tube) and her conditioner for normal hair, which I'm really happy with and want to continue to use but as I seem to use loads more of this than the shampoo I want to save on this if I can as it's not cheap but I find it really suits my hair.

My hair is just past shoulder length and coloured so want a conditioner that will not strip the colour, but will also detangle and condition well. I was wondering about using Shea butter or something similar (coconut or another oil?!) either as a daily conditioner or even leave in, or a weekly deep one. I don't know whether it should be used on it's own or mixed with something else. I haven't tried making my own before so I'm really a first timer!

Thanks for listening to my ramble!!! xx
