It's all going great
He's still going with the water so fingers crossed he'll stick it out
Sausage Casserole tonight as my lovely neighbour has given us a free casserole dish! She knows this is our first home so i was talking about going to buy one and she said don't bother! She also has an apple tree in her garden and let DS go in and collect some so we're going to make an apple crumble when he's home from school.
AND! We found a blackberry bush in the back of our garden so we attempted blackberry jam last night!
Ahh the wonders of having no money!0 -

Hi guys,
I decided to finally get round to cleaning out one of my store cupboards in the kitchen. Its either full of treasure or my pulse cupboard of shame depending on your point of view!
I need help in figuring out what to do with all of these.
3.5Kg pinto beans
2Kg country soup mix
1Kg rough cornmeal
1.5Kg puy lentils
750g black eye beans
2Kg green lentils
2Kg whole black urid dhal
1.5Kg mung dhal
500g chick peas
250g pearl barley
250g bulgur wheat
1Kg red lentils
750g chickpea flour
1.5Kg white urid dhal
200g yellow split peas
300g popping corn
400g aduki beans
1Kg oatmeal
I either bought some of these for a recipe but never got round to using the rest of the pack or picked up the big bags in the clearance sales.I really want to make some inroads into this legume mountain.Any ideas gratefully received."Sometimes life sucks....but the alternative is unacceptable."0 -
You've got me rather jealous, russetred - I love pulses of all kinds and would be in second heaven with that lot!
I haven't tried most of the lentil varieties so I don't know what they're like specifically, but the first thought that occurs to me is to make lentil curry (dahl), either on its own or as a sauce to which you can add meat or vegetables. I use red lentils to make veggie chilli, and green / puy ones are great cooked as a stew with sausages (meat ones in my case, but I'm sure veggie ones would work if you're vegetarian). I made some rather tasty mushroom and green lentil 'sausage rolls' earlier in the year, from a recipe from another forumite, which I can probably dig out if you're interested.
Your bean selection suggests bean burgers to me, or possibly chilli (I've used pinto beans instead of kidney beans before and it worked quite well); the cornmeal could be American-style cornbread or a crunchy coating for HM chicken nuggests or similar (or bean burgers ). Chickpea flour is my latest discovery - I bought it for making my own onion bhajis (which are well worth trying, BTW) and I've also used it for making sweetcorn fritters with pretty good results.
I'm assuming the soup mix is the mixed beans / lentils / grains type, in which case I use this to bulk out soups and stews of all types during the winter (note to self - must buy some!).
Is that of any help at all?Back after a very long break!0 -
My partner and I have mostly been eating out of the freezer and cupboards this month but we've done a full inventory for the freezer and it is still very full  - it is a huge 5ft up right freezer. Basically due to many things - mostly my partner forgetting his bike insurance was up for renewal - we are trying to spend as little as possible on food for as long as possible. We also need to defrost the freezer as it hasn't been done since we moved and it ices up rather fast *rolls eyes*. My partner eats meat (he doesn't eat fish though which is why there isn't any on the lists that follow) and I don't eat meat, egg, dairy etc as I am vegan.
Considering how little we spend on groceries each month I am really suprised at how much food there is in the freezer and cupboards to be honest.

. Could others help us out please? We need vegan and non-vegan meals and as said we want to spend as little as possible. I'm not overly picky with food - as long as it's vegan I usually eat it. My partner is a bit more picky - he doesn't like mushrooms, sweet and sour, overly spicey foods, parsnips, bananas and swede for examples.
Sorry for the long post and thank you in advance for any help.

Hi guys,
I decided to finally get round to cleaning out one of my store cupboards in the kitchen. Its either full of treasure or my pulse cupboard of shame depending on your point of view!
I need help in figuring out what to do with all of these.
3.5Kg pinto beans bean curry, bean salad or bean pate
2Kg country soup mix add all the veg from the bottom of the salad draw and make the soup, it's lovely (if you eat meat, a bit of pork or bacon in makes all the difference)
1Kg rough cornmeal polenta biscuits, corn bread
1.5Kg puy lentils tarka dal, shepherdess pie
750g black eye beans as with pinto - combine the two for any of the dishes for variety
2Kg green lentils as with puy, or lentil burgers, or pate
2Kg whole black urid dhal as with lentils, or mix into your bean curry/salad
1.5Kg mung dhal bean sprouts or a version of Weezl's savoury bites
500g chick peas houmus, Weezl's savoury bites
250g pearl barley use in risotto instead of risotto rice, or make pearl barley, potato and leek stew
250g bulgur wheat tabouleh or mix into your bean salad
1Kg red lentils tarka dal or bung into your bean curry to thicken up
750g chickpea flour mix half and half with bread flour for rolls, or make chapatis
1.5Kg white urid dhal not something I ever used before, but imagine it would work with any of the other pulses in a curry
200g yellow split peas saag chana dal
300g popping corn DVD, a saucepan with a tight fitting lid and a splash of oil; salt or cinnamon and sugar, depending on preference. Dim the lights, enjoy. Or if you don't like popcorn (what is it doing in your cupboard then ?), make a garland to decorate the Christmas tree
400g aduki beans more variety and texture for your curry/salad
1Kg oatmeal flapjacks0 -

This is a good one if you're scared of kneading: http://www.cheap-family-recipes.org.uk/recipe-breadofheaven.html?opt=rsnack
If you are not scared of kneading, follow the recipe but only use 1.5pt of water, then knead, divide and proceed as per recipe.0 -
