I am doing a storecupboard shopping now, other than fresh veg and eggs and things like tea/coffee/butter/cheese (the stuff that my kids eat and drink) I am determined to go through all the food that I have in the cupboards and freezer.

Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

Can you honestly imagine what the board would look like if there was a new thread started for every single little thing? What if I want to run a challenge about using my food up from the third week in January to the 4th week in March? This is one of the busiest boards on MSE and it's supposed to be a useful resource where people can find hints and tips EASILY. Not having to plough through hundreds of new threads every day.
There should be no problem where the thread is merged as long as it is relevant to the original post, which this definitely is. It's the contributors who make a thread a success, not the original poster and/or the thread title IMHO. ;)

As for the challenge I shall probably be eating beef and sprouts until Easter but I have gone easy on most other things and I find that leftover chocolate and Bailey's is rarely a problem. icon7.gif

    Merry Christmas everyone.
I understand what you are saying, and realise threads cannot be made here there and everywhere randomly. I just thought this was a slightly different store cupboard challenge, with a Christmas theme! I suppose the store cupboard challenge will just take a post-festive slant lol. As I said we did not really overbuy much, but we have been given lots of chocolate, I did say to DH we may be eating that for tea some days lol (joking as I don't want to be too unhealthy either lol).

Its a shame the Festive Food Clearout thread was merged - it was going to be my first grocery challenge and I too get confused when the threads get so long.

Perhaps we could have a "First Timers January Grocery Challenge" for those of us who are new to doing it??

    :)

    Just a suggestion :)
  • Today I'm cooking for my parents and normally I'd buy extra, special, food for the meal as I'd normally go for three courses and a bit of luxury. In line with the StoreCupboard challenge I shall be cooking:

Garlic mushrooms (have all ingredients in anyway so no worries there)
Jamie O's salmon with anchovies and olives (salmon found in the freezer, other ingredients in already)
Christmas cake with custard (pretty much leftovers)

So no shopping for me today.

Oh, don't worry about being a newbie- we have all been there! The GC thread is very friendly, there are guidelines and people are happy to help!

I'm back in again this month! £50 allowance for fresh food/milk etc., Have already spent £6.46 of that on reduced casserole steak! So £43.54 to go then! Hopefully enough for the couple of veg box deliveries, eggs and milk needed. We are still working our way through the cheese selections and turkey here!:D

  • Going to make my list from the storecupboard and recently de-frosted freezer !!!

Should have made a list as I was putting the drawers back in but I was soooo fed up of doing battle with the blasted thing that I had to sit down with a wine to recuperate!!!

Found allsorts of random things whilst I was searching for my lentils so should be an interesting month....:rotfl:

Think I need to be like Cat Addict and have a word with the kids so that they know it's spending less on food so that we can spend elsewhere

Have come home from Mum's with some leftovers, so that's a good start. There was mushroom soup in the fridge for us with bread defrosted from the freezer. MIL had given us a HM decorated Xmas cake.

Dinner will be leftover turkey and stuffings from Mum's plus veg in the fridge, whoopsied. Sure the vitamin content won't be huge, but never mind!

Also have turkey scraps from carcase boiled to make a pie tomorrow, pastry ready in the freezer. More veg from freezer or fridge.

Have a lump of stilton and some HM pate, that will do for lunches. still got yoghurts and cakes in the house, so they will do for puds.

Lentil soup simmering nicely in SC using stock from yesterday's small gammon pieces (sliced and frozen in 'sandwich portion' sized packets)

Just finished the leek and turkey pie that Jamie did last week - used turkey left overs brought back from mums - she was going to throw it away  and some of the gammon pieces that were too tender to slice thinly enough
