    why fairmorn ????

I got a contract with the company i have been working for the last 8 months, Anyway the norm is getting a drug screen.
Anyway i went to drug screen but i knew i would fail the test via urine due to being on a few tablets from the doctors. This wasnt a problem as when i arrived and filled out paperwork they said it would be a fail then it would go get sent off to the lab to confirm the reason i failed was due to the tablets i listed on paperwork.

Well got a phone call today from the doctor from the place i got tested and the results were back, It was confirmed that the 3 tablets i listed were found and that was no problem but they found a trace of another substance which is illegal but is controlled if given by doctor.

The doctor on the phone said he will have to give me a fail an will inform my company, Now this means instant dismissal. The drug they said they found a trace of i have never taken in my life. So i got off the phone in shock thinking my life is over cause i cant come up with a answer why the other drug in my system.

I phoned my local GP to call me back regarding the matter but should get a phone call on monday to discuss this matter as its serious regarding my life and job. Anyway due to my older brother being a senior Doctor for a research company in USA i gave him a call to see if can get a answer as he works in labs etc testing all the time.

He came up with the answer to the problem which the lab and doctor in the UK should of picked it up. One of the tablets i take is part of the group the other drug is from and the tablets i take enters the system and creates traces of this other drug in the urine. I have now got it saved and printed from a goverment website from USA.

So am in the clear but still got to speak to the company who tested me about this but instead of speaking to them on phone and going to confront them in the office. 80mile drive but i think i need to do this in person to set the story straight.

Sorry about the long winded story but thats my events of the day. Can i take legal action againest them for giving me info about me failing do to them not being profressional. You google the tablet and it gives you the info you need regarding it.

Are all the meds you are taking prescribed in this country?

Is it codeine and ephedrine or pseudoephedrine or tranylcypromine (an MAOI for depression) by any chance? which will show as morphine and amphetamines. The reason is the company is using a lab that is using a technique called ELISA. This often leads to both inaccurate and imprescise results

You need to have the urine analyised by what is called GC-MS (gas chromoatography hyphenated mass spectrometry), this is the only way to show both an accurate and precise (these words means different things in a scentific context from regular English) result.

    Hope this helps.

James (my Honour degree is in Chemistry)

Edit: my knowledge of chemistry is better than my spelling and typing (my excuse is I had just woken up and logged on). Hope this puts your mind at rest, the lab that came up with the results used by your employeer will be able to tell them (if they are using a real analytical chemist) that false positives are not uncommon. Did you list all of the medication you were taking at the time of giving the sample? If I was the one doing the analysis I would never put someone through this amount of concern if the results had not came out of a GC-MS machine (and I was sure the sample was from the right person), I dont know much about the legal side but putting you in a state of fear, alarm and distress is not in your employeers interest. I am 100% certain this will not affect your employment contract and will get sorted out, unfortunately ELISA is cheap and so used often but not reliable.

If you need to know anymore about medicines showing up as the wrong thing, dont hesitate to ask.

Yes my brother explained all that to me. no it was diazepam which they were able to account for but they found a trace of tamazepam aswell in my urine. But this is from taking the diazepam.

This is the statement from the goverment website below

"Diazepam is rapidly absorbed. Oral bioavailability is approximately 100%, and close to 99% is bound in plasma. The half-life of diazepam is 43±13 hours, but ranges from 40-100 hours if the contribution from active metabolites is included. Diazepam is metabolized to nordiazepam which is an active metabolite with a half-life of 40-99 hours. Temazepam and oxazepam are minor active metabolites of diazepam. Diazepam is excreted in urine mainly as oxazepam conjugate (~33 %), and temazepam conjugate, with only traces of diazepam and nordiazepam. "

Still for the doctor to turn round and tell me i have failed i nearly fell down.

Unfortunately most Doctors would not know this. I bet if you asked you GP he would not know that a test would pick up 4 different drugs and that temazepam (a commonly prescribed sleeping pill) is actually a short acting metabolite of diazepam.

But I am glad to hear you got it sorted.

Edit: in case it happens in future the other very common one is codeine, again most Doctors wont know but codeine is not an active drug. It gets passed through the liver and converted to a small amount of morphine which kills the pain. This then shows up on urine tests and people can be branded heroin addicts because of it, as the active metabolite of heroin is also morphine.
  • well i havent spoke to the doctor yet who told me i failed etc but am not going to let this go cause he could of cost me my careers, am glad i have my brother who works in labs etc and knows about stuff like this.

If I did not have my knowledge in chemistry and the same thing happened to me, I would have flown into a blind panic and would now be very angry. I think it is an issue your employeer also needs to take up with their drug testing company, as well as you taking it further yourself.
  • thats a deffo. well am going to travel and face the company in person and show them exactly the info i found not over the phone. also will be having strong words with the company i work for for using this company in future.

Is there any legal action i can take cause i would of lost my job if i just accepted his fail tho

If they have already told you employeer "he is using/abusing (and has hidden it) temazepam" then I imagine it would be some kind of defamation.
