  • Hey cg,

never thought of putting cheese in soup .. what kind of cheese? I am waiting for the soup to cool down and then am going to liquidise it.

afernoon twink - the weather is pretty nasty here too, not raining yet though. Occasional patches of sunshine.

    what is everyone up to?

  • That is a bonkers looking chicken! They look fab though!

I am kind of considering getting chickens, but am a bit scared we would have no-one to watch them when we are away.

  • actually they are ok. You need to be able to have a run for them that is as fox proof as it can be. If poss they need putting to bed at night. If you can't you can leave them in the run with the house open. Someone will need to check on water but there are some pretty good devices you can buy. If you don't put them to bed on time, they roost in the trees. I was well known for scaring them out of the trees with a broom and then getting hem in their house. sometimes they want to stay up just like children!!

  • That sounds so yummy!

I will have to try that next week when we get our veg delivery, I will let you know how it goes!

I seem to remember that the lady who sold us the house was telling us that a fox had killed all her chickens. I don't know if I could deal with the grief! I think I will tackle getting the veg patch organised first, then think more about the chickens..

    Thanks again Nigella/Jamie!! :p

  • It is funny as a child I was terrified of foxes!! I hated them. You can imagine that when I learned what the hunt did i was a huge supporter!! I lost so many chickens to foxes. They leave such a mess and dpon't always eat the chickens. Just kill them and trash the place. Granny used to get away somehow. We stopped having chickens because we lived next to a huge wood. It upset me so much so we didn't get any more after Granny. I still get a funny feeling when i see foxes. One ran in front of me this week. I can understand all the arguments against hunting now but as a child I would have paid them to kill them!! Although I wouldn't have had wanted any animal to suffer even though I hated them. Have never been hunting. Have been to the meets though. Love to see everyone. Nick would go bananas. we have met them on a ride once!! I had to shut her in someone's stable to prevent her joining them!!
Tell me what you think of the soup when you have cooked it next week.

  • It's weird actually because I love foxes. I think they are soo beautiful, but I think if they killed a chicken of mine I would prob feel differently. I had a dog when I was growing up who looked kind of like a fox and I loved him to death! I think have a natural affinity for all ginger creatures, being one myself!

Don't get the Jamie Oliver thing .. Casanova/Dr Who though ... what a lovely smile! What IS his name??

Although I'll probably have to make do with some cheaper hens to start. But if anyone knows somebody that would like to donate me a couple of laying Araucanas I would be grateful.elefantpink.gifelefantpink.gifelefantpink.gif

How about making minestrone with your cabbage.
Saute chopped onion, carrot, celery, garlic and bacon (if veggie miss out).
Top up with stock and add a load of shredded cabbage and white beans like cannaelli, black eyed or what ever you have in stock (I used kidney beans last time). Towards the end add some short pasta and cook until pasta is ready then serve.
