  • I found MSE when I specifically set out to find out if others had had the same problems as I had had with Clydesdale bank. Once I found the thread and then went on to recover almost £6000, I stayed on MSE as there is a lot of interest on the site. I imagine a lot of others did the same. The strange thing with this thread is that folks set out to find it AFTER they have "sold gold" to Hatton metals or refinery or whatever. They then don't see any reason to stay on MSE. If I were that company I wouldn't be too pleased with those posters as it makes them look bad, doesn't it? And this thread does appear to attract a lot of one post wonders for some reason.
At the moment I do have silver I want to sell but really not sure about this company after reading this thread.

  • Just read back some pages and seen the posts about HGM spamming -well I'm not - they put a note on the email confirmation that if happy with the service mention them to family and friends and also put a note on here, and I am -I did. The point is I got spot price -

'Thanks for submitting your items, they have now been verified and your sale order has been accepted. Full details are as follows: -

    FK 22ct: 3.00 @ £825.11 = £2475.33'

one local buy gold shop offered me £640 each for them another £620 - HGM received them today and fast tracked payment in to my bank account today -:T

Surely "spam" is posting "information" with a vested interest.
Normally customers who get a service where it does "what is says on the tin" don't bother to comment and it is the one in a thousand who get a poor service who have a good rant; even if they have contributed to the unsatisfactory outcome.

I could have have a go at both Barclays Bank and HMRC, who in my option gave pi33-poor service. In contrast I could say that I have had nothing but good prompt service from The Land Registry.

I am a customer of this loss making organisation, to benefit from the low cost foreign transaction service they offer, but I think I might not recommend it for someone needing a comprehensive banking service.

So the question I would ask is "where are the horror stories?" on this thread?
You know the ones where something goes slightly wrong, then degenerates into lies, delays and totally irresponsible buck passing.by the nameless managers and their powerless muppets - I have had two such run-ins with my local authority.
They resulted in transfer payments from my fellow tax payers, organised by the Ombudsman, that have made me £1,000 richer.

The one thing that modern day customers don't want is "transactional anxiety"; they need to know that the process will work right first time in 99.99% of occasions and if there just might be a problem, then there is a human being with authority to sort things out promptly.

So the other question I would also ask is "What is the motivation?" of a small group (or is it one poster) who offers no evidence but keeps trying to suggest that there are flaws in the service offered by Hatton Garden Metals (not to be confused with other "dodgy" organisations with similar names).

Why five posts on the trot mentioning Hatton Garden REFINERY???
Compared with HG METALS the website looks very amateur. Perhaps this is an example of astroturfing? The website has only been there for a year. The company is not registered at Companies House. I would exercise extreme caution.
  • I bought some gold from HGM. I sent them payment by BACS. A couple of days later they emailed to say "where's the money", I replied "Check your bank account".
    I got no response.
Then I checked the order status online at HGM web site, it was marked "cancelled."
I checked with my bank (HSBC, same as theirs) who confirmed the payment had been made to the right place and, as the recipient banked with them, the transcation should have been almost immediate. The payment hadn't been refunded.

So I phoned HGM who then checked their account and "oh yes, we recieved payment 3 days ago, it got overlooked".

That's not good enough, especially when dealing with transactions involving £thousands as is likely with gold.

So what you are saying is that hatton garden metals are a bunch of scam artists and would have took your money if you had not chased?

I'm really surprised to hear that about Hatton Gardens, I've used them a lot over the past few years both to sell gold (scrap mainly) and to buy gold (coins and bars) and I haven't had a problem with them at all, every time I've sold to them the money has gone straight into the bank, and when I've bought from them the coins and bars have arrived promptly without a hitch.

I have also bought from a different and a "big" dealer and half of the coins (sovereigns) were duffers - i.e. fakes (they were still gold but clearly faked ones - £5K of fake coins) - never had an issue with a single coin from Hattons.

I understand why you're concerned, I would be too when lots of cash is at stake, but I think it's probably just a mistake albeit one that probably had your heart in your mouth for a while, rather than something nefarious.

Glad you got it sorted anyway, and if they were dodgy then you wouldn't have the gold or the money?

No, anyone is capable of an admin screw-up, if its a one-off, OK. Once alerted they were quick to resolve the issue. If there were others on here reporting similar problems that would be cause for greater concern. What I would suggest with a sizeable payment, and should have done, is a phone call to say "BACS transfer initiated, please call back to confirm receipt".

Personally I would stay away, my father had an old saying, " once bitten, twice shy". Anyway Atkinson's in Birmingham are far cheaper anyway and they can take card payments. Might be best to go to them in the future.
