Poor me for not being an MSE enthusiast earlier. I sent 10 grams of 9 carat off to the British Gold Refinery a couple of months ago. A rather small amount so poor customer service is somewhat to be expected. But by now it's an absurdly long time and judging by the comments it's probably not coming back. Frustrating that businesses like this are even allowed to keep their doors open

Having listened to the whole 10 mins of this BBC "You & Yours" segment on Gold Selling http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01sd5gm I'm sorry to say that the way they do business  The British Gold Refinery people are the SAME guys as the London Gold Refinery, and they're caught up in some long-term convoluted campaign that has them at the top of the Google rankings. They own the site compare-the-gold-price.com and because it's an unregulated industry, they own a bunch of fake companies which populate the list.

I'm assuming this is how you sent your gold off to British Gold Refinery (who are actually the London Gold Refinery)?? If not, it's useful to point this out for anybody else as Google takes you straight to them. The thieves can keep doing it too, because it's all quite tricky to decipher.

End result once they have your gold is that you don't get it back! Like what happened with the other poster.

I'm still researching for my gold. Gotta be a better price in town than the already big Hatton Garden Metals. Small guys always need to bring prices down to compete!

well I'm to report I sent gold off and another tiny platinum ring, they said plat ring weren't in with package, it was, but I'm not bothered, weren't worth much.
A precious item goes missing between Royal Mail and HGM and you're not bothered? You know platinum is worth more than gold? I would be very bothered, regardless of how much I made from the gold.

Just to update, went into gerralds and got nearly 2k so pretty pleased.
I agree ref the plat, plat is worth so much more than gold and I would not be happy at all.

what can I do though? why would anyone want to open the parcel and take a small plat ring worth £44 something on there scrap value, when there was more value in all the gold I put in there.

doubt i could even claim off royal snail

Actually still my parcel is saying its currently on its way.. what was the point sending it special delivery when you cant track it.. grrrr

I'd certainly put a claim in against Royal Mail myself, you probably won't get the full value back without proof that it was in there (photos before sending) and proof of value. But it's a few mins out of your life that may put 40 quid in your pocket. So personally I would :)

Personally I would push Hatton Garden Metals on this. Either you are mistaken about the plat ring (have you looked for it at home)or they have lost it or something more sinister is afoot:eek:

OT - Just to reiterate some of the previous posts on this topic. The london gold refinery - www.londongoldrefinery.co.uk are scammers and the same people behind the british gold refinery. This is quite clear from their ludicrous comparison site www.compare-the-gold-price.com - why do these people think the average punter is so stupid!!!

Hey guys, happy to report a great trade with Hatton Garden Refinery. After some initial scepticism I sent some of my grandmother's old necklaces off to them in the post. They were incredibly quick to make contact, and I got paid more than expected. A + + trader

Hatton Garden Refinery? As far as I'm aware that's a different company altogether
  • After thinking about sending my gold off to postgoldforcash and finding out they where in liquidation!!! I have become quite and expert in the whole cash for gold thing - might even become a little side line for me between tending to the mother-in-law ( she has the big C ) and the kids. I have heard allot of good things about firms in hatton garden. I have never dealt with hatton garden refinery, they are certainly better than postgoldforcash, and forget about Anne Diamond as I "selb" endorsement - what a joke and to think that she still gets air time on channel 5. hatton garden metals are a good firm from what I can tell also if you are experienced in the trade and have a sound knowledge of what you are selling then Gerrards look interesting. They also came up of a recent poll done by Martin and the team. Although from comments and checking out the site they re more geared up for the trade and you will need to know what you are doing to avoid any misunderstanding. And stay away from londongoldrefinery, just check this out on their terms: 4.1 When we receive your item(s) we will make our own evaluation of your item(s) based upon, but not restricted in any way to the weight and quality of the precious metal content. Our evaluations are benchmarked against the live spot/market price less an average 13% refinery and administration fee.

Hey there Madpolly, I too became an expert after no small amount of research. At the end of the day Hatton Garden Refinery were really fantastic to transact with (unlike reports of many of these other guys), and what I got paid alone will mean that I will keep them in mind. That disclaimer doesn't preclude good business practice in my eyes... Just trying to pass on some snippets from my far too time consuming research onto other shoppers.
