To get rid of the unaddressed mail delivered by the postie you need to write or email to the following;

Royal Mail Door to Door Opt Out
Room 130
Wheatstone House
Faraday Road
Swindon
SN3 5JW or optout@royalmail.co.uk

Put a notice on the postbox saying "addressed mail only, including Royal Mail"

It will take a bit of time to get through the system but should reduce the amount of trees wasted on junk.

I did this about 12 months ago, it worked whilst i had the same postie but then when she left we had different posties and we kept getting the normal unaddressed rubbish that they put through with the mail. I did start to complain individually to the postmen but we went through a stage of having different posties on a weekly basis and i gave up.

I would be interested in finding if other people were successful though.

The same happens to us so I save the envelopes some of the junk contains, stuff the other leaflets etc. the postie delivers into them and post them (stamp-less) after sticking on a new address label:

Royal Mail Door to Door Opt Out
Room 130
Wheatstone House
Faraday Road
Swindon
SN3 5JW

Well, it makes me feel better and the loss of recycled paper is minimal.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

You can always recycle the junk mail!
I spoke to my local postie of 15 years and he said if they didn't have the free junk mail to deliver the post Office would be out of work and so would he.It's an extra source of cash for the post office! Maybe it even helps to keep the postage prices down? Help keep your postie in work!

I have used MPS and the Royal Mail thing. It does work for so long but you have to sign up regularly to keep it working (i.e. it's not permamnent).

Sometimes things slip through and I ignore them. Really annoying, though having to go through this rubbish.

Frankly I could live without the Royal Mail. I like sending flowers, other companies do that. Most of the important information I want to get comes via email. I can live without the junk and bills, thankyou very much.

One question, though - how do I stop junk mail coming for previous owners of the house? I obviously can't write to the MPS for someone else, but the junk keeps coming for them. I usually just write "return to sender" and post it back but I wondered if there's a way of telling the post office to just bin it.

I tried sending an email to the mediacentre.customer.service@royalmail.co.uk.
and the email was refused with the following text - seems to be something to do with blocking spam!

As I understand it the MPS will only stop direct marketing addressed to you. To get rid of the unaddressed mail delivered by the postie you need to write or email to the following;

Royal Mail Door to Door Opt Out
Room 130
Wheatstone House
Faraday Road
Swindon
SN3 5JW or optout@royalmail.co.uk

Put a notice on the postbox saying "addressed mail only, including Royal Mail"

It will take a bit of time to get through the system but should reduce the amount of trees wasted on junk.
Opting out of Door to Door can also be done by the following :-
08457 950 950 option door to door
Press 5 to opt out
And 5 again
They will send an opt out form.
This will stop all mail that the royal mail are paid to deliver - IE unaddressed mail without your name or address on it. The royal mail are not allowed to not deliver mail that is addressed to you - if that makes sense !

For the addressed stuff get in touch with The Mail Preference Service
write to The Mail Preference Service, Freepost 22, London, W1E 7EZ or on line at http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/mpsr/

Or for the unaddressed rubbish that comes through the door delivered by the postman write to Royal Mail Door-to-Door Opt Out Dept, Room 130, Wheatstone House, Faraday Rd, Swindon, SN3 5JW. or email mediacentre.customer.service@royalmail.co.uk.

do they have a website?
• I joined MPS about 2 years ago....and it seems to have worked, but obviously not with postie junk, so, for the last 12 months I have saved all of it and am sending it back to the post office in a large envelope telling them that " if I were to litter my street I would be find, so please do NOT litter my home."
Whether this will work I don't know, but it's worth a try, I think.
