If I put a sign on my letter box I'd probably say "no commercial junk mail" - sometimes people make an effort to do things for the community, and that I welcome. I also like to read the free papers - these often give an insight into local affairs I otherwise wouldn't get.

I used to be registered with the MPS but I had to cancel my registration, as it seemed to stop ALL commercial mail, even the stuff I wanted. I stopped getting the Boots Advantage Card mailings, Nectar etc, so I missed out on points coupons because of the MPS registration. Only sign up to them if you really do want to stop all your "junk" mail.

I've tried putting a polite sign on the door saying something along the lines of "no junk mail, no free papers etc." but everyone ignores it - post men, paper delivery boys, betterware sellers

Probably 'cause some of them will get into trouble if they don't deliver the leaflets/papers. I used to deliver free newspapers and my boss would check that I was doing my job. One house had a "no papers/junk mail" sign on the door so I didn't put anything through their door. Unfortunately my boss chose this house when carrying out one of his random inspections. He asked the owner whether he was receiving a free newspaper each week and did the guy say, "No, I have a notice up saying I don't want it". Of course not, he just said, "no" and I nearly lost my job.

Many of the junk leafletters in my area put two through each letter box to get through them more quickly!

Its fun to have something in the mail lol! I always recycle the junk letters, but still something to do.
And it does keep Royal Mail in business, through Direct Mail and Door2Door items.
    (I am a postman btw)

    are you for real ?

just by you opting out of door to doors will NOT save a tree. The sheet will still be printed off yet yours will just be returned and put back into recycling.

what a load of old moaners. Without Door to Door mail ( junk mail to you lot) the RM would go bust. Then you would have a real reason to moan. Trust me that would be awful.

Postman get up at about 4.30 in the morning come rain, snow or sunshine for £8ph. We get moaned at by customers, chased by dogs and sometimes made to feel like crap by our managers. I probably have more qualifications that 90% of my customers and 99% of my managers. I am a postie out of choice. I love being there when my kids come home from school and always work my day off so I can enjoy my 3 week holiday in spain!

The next dog that chases me will get it, but I'm not sure who winds me up more, Rover or moaning lissyloo ? what a boring life you must have to do all this moaning.
    nothing.

My Postie has stopped delivering unaddressed stuff because I phoned the royal mail customer services and asked for it, I think they put me through to a diff dept and then I got sent an opt out letter to sign and return.

The law should be changed to make everything opt in, it would save a fortune in paper & plastic. And my other idea is that all cd & dvd promotional advertising materials should have to be CDRW and DVDRW, so at least we can delete them and re use them, instead of it going into landfill!
  • I had a professional photo delivered the other day, with "photo-fragile-do not bend" all over it. The postie folded it over double and wedged it in my letterbox.
    It's definitely not definately!
  • As I understand it the MPS will only stop direct marketing addressed to you. To get rid of the unaddressed mail delivered by the postie you need to write or email to the following;

Royal Mail Door to Door Opt Out
    Room 130
    Wheatstone House
    Faraday Road
    Swindon
    SN3 5JW or optout@royalmail.co.uk

Put a notice on the postbox saying "addressed mail only, including Royal Mail"

It will take a bit of time to get through the system but should reduce the amount of trees wasted on junk.
