How do I get Postman to stop delivering junk mail? (merged)

I asked the post office not to send anymore of their own junk mail, but I felt the real mail was being delayed so had to go back cap in hand.0

Junk mail is a minor nuisance but, the way I see it, it helps fund our wonderful Royal Mail.
No-one appears to have an ecological objection.
I do (unless it's on recycled paper and they plant trees etc).they are paid to deliver this junkies.so u cant stop them
Hit men are paid to kill people but that doesn't make it OK - yes I know it's an extreme example but hopefully you get the point that just because someone is paid to do something doesn't make it legal, moral, ecologically sound etc.
I think you can stop them and by and large I have been sucessful.
Sign up to the "door-to door opt out" address.
Sign up to MPS
and don't give anyone your address unless you need to.
Don't enter loads of competitions that you have very little chance of winning.
Works pretty well for me.0 -
Can't you just put a polite 'NO JUNK MAIL' notice on your front door?
I wouldn't want to damage my door with any adhesive substance, but I also wouldn't rely on the post people to read it given their record of following instructions.0 -
Surely the MPS is about stopping unwanted and unsolicited mail? Entering competitions does not make your right to this null and void! As long as you tick the box so that the company can't share your address, they are not legally allowed to do so and the companys who send junk mail also still shouldn't have access to your address. JUST because you choose to enter competitions does not nullify your right, it just means that more companies have your address...mail from those companies is not necessarilly Junk in the true sense of the word...you have given them permission to use it. (Unless you have ticked the box that says they can't).
Just a thought!Good Enough Club member number 27(2) AND I got me a stalkee!

I don't know what the fuss is all about. Just put it in the recycle bins or as previously suggested use the prepaid envelopes you sometimes get to post junk back. They have to pay the postage and it keeps our people in work.
I know it was said tongue in cheek, but if your dog bites anyone, postmen included then you will probably end up in court. I was bitten twice when I was in the job and it is not funny. I was off for weeks after one attack. I just got the police to them that time but in this day and age I would have sued the owners.
MPS can only stop mail from those firms who sign up to it. Same as the TPS.Don't buy the Sun.0 -
I've tried putting a polite sign on the door saying something along the lines of "no junk mail, no free papers etc." but everyone ignores it - post men, paper delivery boys, betterware sellers - all get recycled.
Feel like opening the door just after they've pushed it thru the letterbox and asking them if they can read the sign and why are they ignoring it but I guess I might get a brick delivered thru the window during the evening !!!
But as people have said - it generates jobs. people get paid to deliver it, others get paid to pick it up again, more get paid to recycle it, then others get paid to turn it back into junk mail.
And so the circle continues0 -

As I have said previously some people care about the planet.
I am pretty sure putting it in recycle bins doesn't nullify the ecological damage.
Also why should I spend my free time recycling this rubbish?
If you aren't bothered then perhaps you'd like to spend your free time coming round to my house and taking it away :-)They have to pay the postage and it keeps our people in work.
Yes, damaging our fragile eco-system.
If they planted trees I wouldn't mind but I don't think most of them do.
I think junk mail damages our planet.
If you don't I'd be interested to hear your arguments as to why it doesn't.0 -

In The Netherlands there is a law banning junk mail or free newspapers to those who do not want them. You will see stickers on letterboxes saying "Ja" or "Nee" (yes/no) to the two categories.
What upsets me particularly is the lengths to which people will go to differentiate their junk mail from others', so that the victims take notice of it. A particularly nasty example was a jiffy bag from Telewest entitled "free DIY broadband installation kit". It didn't contain anything that needed protecting, of course.Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0 -
I see more and more notices saying "no junk mail" on letter boxes in my area. Unlikely that cowardly government of any hue will bring in sensible legislation like in NL to tackle it though - just like with charging for polythene bags and smoking bans (only implemented after a great deal of back-bench rebellion).Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0
