For the addressed stuff get in touch with The Mail Preference Service
write to The Mail Preference Service, Freepost 22, London, W1E 7EZ or on line at http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/mpsr/

Or for the unaddressed rubbish that comes through the door delivered by the postman write to Royal Mail Door-to-Door Opt Out Dept, Room 130, Wheatstone House, Faraday Rd, Swindon, SN3 5JW. or email mediacentre.customer.service@royalmail.co.uk.

Hi Im one of your downtrodden posties. As well as joining the MPS What you can also do is send a letter to your local delivery office saying that you do not want any unaddressed mail put through your door, i.e the leaflets you get every week. Might not be much of a help but its a start.

The MPS has worked a treat since we moved.

When you ask to opt out of receiving door to door junk mail thats is delivered by the post office they will reply telling you that this means they you will no longer recieve any public information from central or local goverment, thats the stuff that is addressed to householder instead of a specific address, as the post office cant seperate these items and the will ask you to confirm this is acceptable to you.

  • If I get anything important from the government it should have my name on it.. election paper / council tax...
    So hopefully won't miss anything.

    Probably.
But local councils do use the "door to door" service to deliver information e.g. when your bins are being collected on bank holidays.
You may miss out on this information.

Personally I don't think this is a big deal and I can get the times off the web.

I don't find the door-to-door opt out works very well at all.

As soon as there is a new post person, they don't tell them.
I have had to make numerous complaints.
I have even sent them letter threatening to charge them and take them to the small claims court for the costs of "processing" their junk.
I would love to see a test case on this and might actually do it one day.
I think I have a "right" not to be bombarded with unsolicited junk every day.

I would be interested in the views of the post person on this, but I think they should pass the information on when they get new staff.
I shouldn't have to "opt out" every time they change the post person.

I do use the mailing preference service.

But also when my sons were younger I was on mailling lists for lots of things suitable for their age group. Of course they outgrew them but the brouchures kept coming. So I'd put them in a pile, and then every so often do a batch of quick emails saying my children were now too old for their product/service, most of the brouchures stopped, and lots of companies said thank you for letting them know. It does cost them money to send the brouchures out, so especially for smaller companies they don't really want to send them to people who aren't potential customers.

Junk mail is a minor nuisance but, the way I see it, it helps fund our wonderful Royal Mail. Doubly so if the originators send me a Freepost envelope to send their junk back in.

Would Scottish Friendly take me and Mrs GG off their list? I don't want anymore tax friendly savings!

    :)

The pre-paid envelope has been my weapon of choice in the past. I've torn up all the old envelopes I couldn't recycle and posted them back in the pre-paid envelope with a little note asking "how do you like unwanted crap through your letterbox", that should do the trick, but if the mail keeps coming make the replies heavier and heavier until your posting bricks back.

Seems to work pretty well for us. On one occasion the postman actually knocked on the door to apologise for accidentally delivering some junk the day before!
