I joined MPS about 2 years ago....and it seems to have worked, but obviously not with postie junk, so, for the last 12 months I have saved all of it and am sending it back to the post office in a large envelope telling them that " if I were to litter my street I would be find, so please do NOT litter my home."
Whether this will work I don't know, but it's worth a try, I think.

Simpler to just opt out (as mentioned earlier in this thread) surely?

  • I always just bung any personalised junk back in the post, labelling it, 'please return and recycle', because I don't always assume companies DO recycle, many don't. I don't usually receive anymore from the company after that, and as I live in rented, rubbish often turns up for previous occupants and I don't mind doing my bit for the environment.

The pre-paid envelope has been my weapon of choice in the past. I've torn up all the old envelopes I couldn't recycle and posted them back in the pre-paid envelope with a little note asking "how do you like unwanted crap through your letterbox", that should do the trick, but if the mail keeps coming make the replies heavier and heavier until your posting bricks back.

The reply envelope whether pre paid or not is also my weapon the unfortunate company who includes one of those in any junk mail sent to me I return all other torn up junk mail in the one envleope. Any leaflets delivered by the postman are put back in the post box on my way to work. That sould also help to keep the Royal Mail busy

Really getting on my nerves now, each day I get 1 (if that) letter addressed to me and then at least 3 letters "to the occupier" from Royal Mail about bloody car insurance, sky tv etc etc.

    I'm really peeved off!

I wanted to opt out but if I do that, I don't want to miss out on the stuff from the council etc that is addressed to "the occupier".

Sending it back in their prepaid envelopes is good, but its still wasting resources in the mean time and won't ultimately put a stop to this waste!

Its a joke that everyone makes a bit deal about spam which IS annoying, but Royal Mail can put what they want through our door.

I can feel a complaint coming on, ASA anyone???

Postman can deliver up to 3 items of unaddressed mail (flyers) however the limit is being increased at the end of the summer. Addressed mail-write "refused" on it and post it in a letterbox, perhaps the best flyer that could be delivered would be for the mail preference society as i can assure you that posties dont want to climb flights of stairs with bin-fodder

I've just received my opt-out form - it arrived very quickly after requesting it.

I am a bit annoyed by the great lengths they go to to try to persuade you that it is a bad idea to opt out. After all, what of any great importance would come from the council, etc, that wouldn't have your address on it?

I also notice that they are obliged to deliver addressed items to "the occupier". Presumably if opting out catches on, there will be more and more mail addressed like this, but presumably also this will cost companies more because the mail has to be sorted.

    Spot on post gromituk

Have just e-mailed them to say I want to opt out and beaning the moaning git I am, I am thinking of complaining to the postal regulator to ask why on earth they allow RM to do this!

RM should try delivering the mail we pay them for on time, then they might get a bit more business!

    junk mail isnt all evil.

a lot of what we get shoved through our letterbox is printed on a single side of non glossy paper, which makes it great for scrap printer paper/ taking quick notes.

all my envelopes are also recycled in this way, by using them as notes/ shopping lists etc

    edited to add:

you can also buy special stickers from charity shops (such as oxfam) to stick over old addressee details on envelopes if you wish to re-use them. this then gave you a nice, neat place to write the new address details.

jiffy bags are another great one, especially if you ebay. all you need to do is write 'sender' above your name and address, turn the bag over and pop the new address on the front. simple pimple :j

I emailed the person who sent the opt-out confirmation letter, with the following:

I recently requested to opt-out from Door to Door and received a letter "signed" by you. This says that "I may miss important information from local, national or government publications."
Can you give me some specific examples of these,
please? In the case of local government material, I
    am in <wherever>.

    and received the following reponse:

Thank you for your email regarding the Door to Door Opt Out Service.
I'm not sure what your local Government area would send out to you, but I
get Council literature and when there is a pending Local or Government
    election

there is quite a lot that appears through my letterbox.

So basically it's a load of bull, as I suspected. I'm going to opt out, and I think I'm going to contact the postal regulator about this scaremongering.
