£2k! You're having a laugh. That would be an extreme spec, you can build a high end system for just over £1k.delmontebanana wrote:Seeing that PC equipment is getting more advanced and quicker to be replaced each day, would you use a Pentium from 2001-2002?Namely: A Pentium2 1.5Ghz with 512MB RAM computer? Let's not even mention a recent game like Elder Scrolls 4 here, just for simple everyday use you will find it to be slow. That was possibly THE top end PC of the time so it's extremely doubtful ANY PC will last 4-5 years.
That'd be a Pentium 4 (1.5 Ghz). And recent games like Elder Scrolls 4 wouldn't run on a PS2 anyway. I'm not sure I understand the comparison. Plus the PS2's graphics are far inferior, running on a tv at a much lower resolution. It's only since the introduction of HD that consoles will start to compete with PC's but even then most of them will run games at 720p, which is below what a reasonable PC will run a game at.delmontebanana wrote:Let's look at the Nvidia 6800GT HIGH-END Graphics card release in Summer 2004 with a price tag of £250-300. It's been downgraded to a Mid-Range card not even 2 years later and the price drop has dropped to £150, running ES4: Oblivion, it will run at a lesser spec than the Xbox 360. The PS2 was released in 2000 and 6 years later people are still playing it and the graphics have stayed pretty consistant.
True, but consoles are limited to the day they are released. As they aren't upgradable games rarely improve over those 5-6 years unless the developers can squeeze more out of the system.delmontebanana wrote:Investment on the long term and short term if you're planning to buy something to play games... then I believe a Console wins hands down.
I wouldn't necessarily say so. My 360 has cost me around £550 so far due to needing wireless adapters, a few games, wireless charge kits, an additional controller etc... I've got Oblivion, and that has certainly kept me entertained, but no where near as much as the PC.
Battlefield 2 is a good example. £15 cheaper than most 360 games and I must have racked up over 200 hours of play. Now that's good value. For me, having played online with 63 other people it's difficult to go back to online console games that have 8 or 16 players. I would quite happily buy a mid-range pc, Battlefield 2, World Of Warcraft etc... and be able to play games and program, use office, browse the internet, manage my music collection etc...
I guess it depends upon your needs as to which is better value."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
Play nicely guys..
Its all just a matter of opinion and personal preference0 -

Dunno where you got that from as Sony confirmed that the price will be approx £425 anyway
http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/18/uk-playstation-3-comes-in-at-425-sony-loses-its-marbles/
It is confirmed to be $599 in the States and 599 Euros in Europe.
We are paying more than both the US and the rest of Europe(!). Additionally, the games are rumoured to be 69.99 from normal retail stores - bit of a ripoff if you ask me.
I was looking forward to the PS3 having owned the PS1 and PS2, but the pricing and Sony's arrogance has put me off
A £425 games console is not a console for the masses...and really, to see any graphical benefits of the games and BluRay films, you'll need to purchase a HDTV - so add another £500-600 or so
For near abouts the same price, you can probably get a XBox 360 and Nintendo Wii..0 -

Yep, we won't see a price of anywhere near £299 for a good few years, unless of course there is such a drastic drop in sales that Sony have no other choice but to lower it.Additionally, the games are rumoured to be 69.99 from normal retail stores - bit of a ripoff if you ask me.
That should be put into the 'wild' rumour catagory, there's no way we'll see games priced at £69.99, you can pretty much rule out a console doing well in the market with prices like that, even if it is Sony!
As with Xbox360 prices (although they are gradually being lowered in price), we'll probably see PS3 games sell for £49.99 (still a rip-off!), with that price not likely to change quickly with them using blu-ray discs.
The whole point of the PS3 is to rip-off all the customers whilst Sony grow even larger as a company, they are using all their new techology - regardless to whether its any good for a console, because they know the boost in sales it'll give them.
I dont have a problem with them making money, but when they create new techology and extort people out of money so they can make billions by running, for example, the new media format with 'blu-ray' it's rubbish.
Blu-ray will mean nothing to the majority of people, who'll pay for it regardless.0 -
And the fact of the matter is that BluRay is not the confirmed next gen medium, hd-dvd's may win the day, much like how Sony's betamax lost out to the VHS. Personally i don't see any real value in buying dvd movies and i've just stopped now, if i want to see a movie i'll rent it. There is a plus side to the bluray disc though, a 54gb capacity should allow for hugely massive games, great details, long stories etc...hopefully.
But yes I agree, £549.99 is way too much, but they're probably justifying it buy the inclusing of 3 games (which arent all that appealing anyway).
If I could constantly upgrade my pc on the cheap i'd probably not even think about buying a console but the fact is technology for pc components moves along quite quickly for me to constantly do that.
My personal view on the price is that it WILL get lowered, I was right about the PS3 controller when i first saw it, and i'm sure i'll be right by saying the price wont stay at £549.99 on play.com.
Cheers for your time.I'm better off without you.0 -

Soz..I meant £59.99 instead of £69.99
But yep I totally agree.....I was shocked to hear that X360 games were gonna cost £49.99 - that price is a complete rip-off...
The start of these rumours came from a recent announcement by Sega giving details of the pricing of their games on the Nintendo Wii and PS3:
http://www.jeuxvideo.fr/les-prix-des-jeux-playstation-3-et-wii-actu-35245.html
- Sonic The Hedgehog (PS3) : Euro 67.99
- World Snooker Championship 2007 (PS3) : Euro 73.99
- Sonic wildly Fire (Wii) : Euro 59.99
- Super Monkey ball: Banana flash (Wii) : Euro 59.99
AFAIK, XBox 360 titles are priced at 59.99 Euros RRP (same as the Wii) in Europe. The price increase of the PS3 titles can mean anything - but it is not helped by the fact that play.com are charging £49.99 for PS3 games: and they are usually £10 less than retail stores
It is no secret that by selling it with the Bluray drive, Sony are losing a lot from each PS3 they sell - they will have to make it up somehow right? :mad:0 -
Think of Betamax, think of UMD, think of Memory sticks, think of Minidiscs, think of ATRAC............ Think of Sony's monopoly as the cause of its eventual death.Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????0

YvonneCrossland wrote:My DH was told the console only was £300 or the pack with games etc for £410. If Play are charging more than this then I would think maybe the price will come down a bit before it's released?
Sony have confirmed the console only price is around £425. There is in some countries a cheaper "value" pack" but it lacks features that you can't upgrade to and some retailers are saying that Sony are not releasing it in the UK.0 -

apart from betamax, the formats you mention are still going (even minidisc-just)
remember, that all the above are technically superior to there counterparts, betamax was better than vhs, ATRAC whips mp3s !!! at 128k, Minidiscs are far better than the long defunct DCC, and memory sticks are faster than a comparable SD card for example.
Indeed, blu-ray seems to be better than HD-DVD in terms of capacity, if not read/write/reliability.
We'll just need to wait 'n see with this one......The word is BOUGHT, not BROUGHT.
It's LOSE, NOT LOOSE.
You ask for ADVICE not ADVISE.0 -

Apparantly they are releasing two versions in the UK, a cheap one and premium version.
The cheap version contains a 20gb hard drive and less features than the premium version which comes with a 60gb hard drive so they are trying to get people to spend more money purchasing the more expensive version0
