blu ray drive £500 or writer £822

And there is the problem... blueray is what is making the PS3 so darn expensive... and so darn late. And if it ends up like the PS2 then you will end up with a pretty poor cheap-!!! dvd/blueray player and within six months you would be able to buy a cheap dvd/blueray player for £50 or less.

So if you swap that out for a £30 dvd writer you get a powerful pc that does better graphics, other stuff as well, has a much bigger hard drive and costs the same or less than the PS3.

Then wait a year or so until you see if Blueray or HD-DVD actually takes off and buy a stadalone player or pc drive for £30.

    :-)

PS/ You don't need a media centre to watch your PC on tv, a lot of mid->high end graphics cards have TV outs... and a lot of LCD tvs have PC-inputs.

    ARGHHH!!!

Buy a PC .... PC has much better games, can be better graphics if you buy a good PC (for the same price as this thing) ... and can be used for soo much more!

I'm ready for all you console fan boys :P

    Sorry, I can't resist a good console vs. pc debate. : p

PC's on the whole, unless you have an unlimited supply of money or hardware, are a LOT more expensive to run if you are just planning to play the latest games on it. Consoles on the other hand DO NOT need to be upgraded and will give out a consistantly good standard of graphics and all you will need to do is buy the game, where as PC games, although they may look BETTER than the same game on the console, will more than likely only run that way on a HIGH-END PC (typically in the range of £2k or more).

Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion for example:
On the Xbox 360, the graphics are mid-ranged. Not all the settings which were made for the game are set to max. But it is playable with an amazing frame rate and graphics setting.

On the PC, if you have a high-end PC set on max settings.. wow. Possibly the best looking game ever made. But you're looking at a £2k plus price tag for the PC and it will most probably get outdated in a few months time. Most people are playing the game on Mid to Low-end PC's and therefore the graphics settings are set equal or below that of an Xbox 360.

A high end PC will easily last 4-5 years

Another point. If you get a PC of a higher spec than a PS3 or console. Over the long term all the games ever released on the console will run on the PC and also the games on PC will be cheaper and of higher quality e,g, they can be patched etc. Plus a PC is more versatile. You do the math. In other words initial investment is high but over the long term it may be cheaper.

Consoles on the other hand DO NOT need to be upgraded
Then why would anyone want to buy a PS3? Surely the PS2 will be perfectly fine for everyone ;)
What I think you mean is that you CAN'T upgrade consoles - Sony and Microsoft want you to throw away your old console and all the games and buy a new better one, that way they can make all the money rather than some PC component manufacturers in Taiwan.
The real debate is therefore do you want to spend a SHED LOAD of cash on a new console and games every 2-3 years, or a LOAD of cash on PC bits, spread evenly over time!
The other benefit of PCs is that the people making the upgrade components compete against each other, so prices come down much more quickly. If the XBox 360 could be upgraded in lots of little bits, or you could buy it from lots of different manufacturers the price would probably have halved by now.

thats way too much for a console!! I'll get the Nintendo Wii and maybe later the xbox 360 (it will probably still be cheaper getting both of these than the PS3).

I'm all for brand loyalty and everything, but have you wondered exactly what you're paying for..?

You'll be able to buy BOTH an Xbox 360 and a Nintendo Wii for the price of one PS3. Given that the top ten games on any system are of virtually identical quality and appeal, are you sure that paying twice as much to Sony's shareholders is that important to you..?
