I agree. While I agree firmly with Nasa's detracters about the importance of the poppy and remembering our fallen, I think there's something a little distasteful about using the "someone died so you could have free speech" defence to villify someone who is exercising that free speech. The replies stopped being a defence of rememberence sunday and its symbols and started being an excuse to "beat up" on Nasa some time ago and I think thats a shame.

  • I have always found the Remembrance Sunday service moving, and the last couple of years I have watched it on BBC1. This year, being no different, it moved me to tears. My great uncle was one of those who sacrificed his life in WW2 to free us from the threat of Hitler and his Nazi party.

I do not agree with the politicians who send our servicemen and women to foreign lands on some stupid whim (or for a black liquid to power their limos in the case of Iraq), but I want to back them to the hilt.

I am in no way brave enough to do what they do for us every day. I just wish our government would just bring them home now.

And, yes, under this exterior there is an emotional old get :)

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
    In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields.

As long as we all remember it was British servicemen that died, and not just English. I was watching a documentary on sky one which constantly mentioned the battles between the english and the germans, which is completley inacurrate!!
