Where to get a VISA Electron card?

  • i have a co-op cashminder account for about 2 years the bank has now told me it's been changed from visa/electron to a proper debit card (visa) so now you will get charged by ryanair etc, so how have you managed to not pay, is it purely down to the company saying they will charge this that and the other or what?

No Co-Op have said they are changing over Cashminder account cards to Visa Debit from Visa Electron when they replace them on expiry but they are not replacing them early and mine had a three year life when it was issued last year and still has about 22 months to go as a Visa Electron card. Visa Electron cards say Electron on them and the card numbers are not raised and cannot be put through a manual clank-clank credit card machine. You have misunderstood if you have a Co-Op card that still says Visa Electron on it and think it has been changed in to a Visa Debit card. Only a card with raised numbers and that says Visa Debit is a Visa Debit card.

Also when I spoke to Co-Op the other day to set up online banking (now available on the Cashminder account) the lady there said they now realised that some customers did not want to replace Visa Electron with Visa Debit and that if you made a special request you should be allowed to keep your Visa Electron card with Co-Op.:T

I suprised you would have got charged this fee on your visa delta card with A + L as the visa debit that you had aka visa delta card its a DEBIT card like the visa electron. My friend is with barclays and has a visa delta/debit card and was not charged any fee when booking flights with ryanair.

Some airlines are now charging for credit and debit cards, including Visa and Mastercard Debit cards.
I got stung for £9.00 by Flyglobespan when using my card. I am thinking of getting a visa electron card to book flights with.

Hi i didn't quite understand your comment. Are you sure people can request to get a new card after expiry with electron card, I also signed up for online banking and they said they HAD to send out a new card but i think this is due to the fact i moved :( the new card does have raised numbers on and the electron part has been removed so it says Visa Debit its no longer an Electron card? but i suppose because i have used ryan air before that they may stil recognise it as a electron. but i think i will find another account elsewhere just in case.

http://www.moneyfacts.co.uk/money/currentaccounts/2/banking_basic_bank_accounts.aspx reflects this change it says Visa and not electron

as does this one http://visa-electron.co.uk/list-of-banks-that-issue-visa-electron-cards-in-the-uk/ it lists it as recently changed from electron. http://visa-electron.co.uk/co-operative-bank/ someone commented that the new card does not say electron.

  • I used my new Visa Electron Card to pay for a flight on Ryanair, and, although Ryanair didn't add a charge, a 'DC Service Charge' of £1.50 has appeared on my statement. Does anyone know what this is? The card is linked to a Halifax Easycash Bank Account.

You didn't pay in GBP, you paid in Euros, therefore it's a currency conversion charge charged by the bank.

It might be because the flight was not priced in stirling. Halifax has never charged me for Ryanair or other lowcost flights originating in the UK.

I tried to test the card out by taking aout a small amount before a holiday trip.

It didn't work. A Post Office employee witnessed that I could get into the account as we could see the cash choices - but Account Invalid flashed up.

She rang the PO Helpline,(or Stonewalling Team as I came to think of it) which a Bank of Ireland employee later told me was run by Tsys - a Milton Keynes company.

The advisor to me that the money was still in the account but that it had never been accessed. An argument ensued. The PO employee backed me up.

More Stonewalling ensued as the advisor admitted that she could not help but would not put me through to a supervisor who might have been able to.

It took me around 20m plus to sort it out.

Apparently advisors on the Stonewalling team are instucted to 'deal with the majority of complaints at the first stage WITHOUT NEED FOR ESCALATION'.

Maybe they receive a severe horsewhipping if they put anyone through to a supervisor. Sadly, one can only guess at the punishments they fear, for completing such an unhelpful action.

Eventually I decided to take out as much money as I could as I did not feel the account was secure. Because if my use of the card was not recorded, who else might be able to use it?

I wrote a letter of complaint to the PO. Apparently I am 'ungracious' (yes they really said that) for expecting not to pay the fees my worrysome card.

The answer came from the Bank of Ireland, as one of its employees told me - so maybe the nice PO has no idea what is done in its name.

I am informed that the card also shows no balance - so you have to guess what it is. Fun for all the Family.

My advice is try it before you go on holiday.

A 20m international phone call can be expensive.

Especially if you are on a mobile.

After all, you don't want to be accused of being ungracious for the privilege of being StoneWalled - do you?

  • I just spent the past hour opening a new basic account at the Co-op - then promptly closed it after I found out they do not offer a Visa Electron card anymore! Serves me right, next time I should read the whole thread on MSE! Anyway, a really friendly chap at the cancellation dept said it was Visa who pulled the plug and there was nothing Co-op could do.
I have now applied online to Halifax and await with anticiption! Will keep you posted...
