  • why oh why does it have to be sooo complicated and confusing

Because Ryanair deliberately make it all as difficult and confusing as possible so that as many of its customers as possible will continue to pay it the £5 per sector per passenger card fee.

I just used an online vitual debit card to book ryanair flights.

    https://www.entropay.com

You setup the account, and put a minimum of £10 on it,(costs 50p to do this) then you can book your ryanair flights. The card shows on your screen as a "visa debit" but if you select the visa electron option when booking a ryanair flight it will accept it as an electron.
  • ooh it's all sooo confusing :(

all we all want is a free way to book ryan air tickets rather than pay the charges

    thanks x

As mentioned by NonGeographicalMan Ryanair are just trying to make it as difficult as possible so people pay their charges.

Possible solution: Open an account which will provide you with a VISA electron card. For example I opened Halifax Easycash account
    http://www.bankofscotlandhalifax.co.uk/bankaccounts/easycash.asp

however there are a few other providers see
    http://visa-electron.co.uk/list-of-banks-that-issue-visa-electron-cards-in-the-uk/

There are other ways of obtaining VISA electron card, however this was the easiest for me.

    Good luck

Thanks for the info. I think I will use them while I am waiting for my Halifax card/s to come through.

However, has anyone used them recently? I have tried to get through to the website and I am getting a connection error. Though I admit it might be my internet access from work.

I set mine up and used it on the day I posted about it. It was working within an hour.

The only bad side I found was I had to put £10 on the card to spend 12p.
  • Here is an example from a booking screen today with Easyjet. This shows there is zero fee for using Visa Electron or Carte Bleu (for any Frenchmen amongst you who happen to have this one), a £2.50 fee per whole booking (not per passenger or per sector) fee for using any other payment card (even Maestro or Visa Debit) and a further 2.5% fee with a minimum charge of £4 per booking (not per passenger or per sector) on top for using Visa CreditCard (but not Debit card or Electron card), Mastercard, Diners Club or Amex.

So in other words while Easyjet only charge no fee for paying by Visa Electron their fees for both Debit and Credit card use are much lower and fairer than Ryanair's, especially for anyone booking for a large number of people travelling together. Then of course Easyjet also give you a 20kg and not a 15kg baggage allowance, although their excess baggage charges of £14 per kilo are actually higher than Ryanair's £10 per kilo pay at the airport fees, even though you can pre-book the excess baggage amount:eek:

I'm not quite sure what Easyjet mean by "domestic transactions" though?
All bookings will incur a £2.95 booking fee save for bookings made by Visa electron and Carte Bleue (domestic transactions) which are free. Bookings made by Visa Credit Card, MasterCard, Diners Club, American Express, UATP/Airplus will incur an additional fee of 2.5% of the total transaction value, with a minimum charge of £4.00, whichever is greater. Note this is a UK retail site. Non UK Cardholders transacting on this site may be subject to a cross border fee applied by their Card Issuer.

The total amount that will be charged to your card is:

    Paying by credit card
    £132.67

    Paying by debit card
    £128.67

    Paying by Visa Electron
    £125.72

It really is quite simple - go on to the Halifax website and apply for a easy cash account. Your Visa Electron card shows up in a week. Is that idiot proof enough ;)
