i have a smile internet bank current account they automatically issue a visa debit card, have just phoned to enquire about visa electron, 1 minute phone call and they are sending me one, i get to keep my visa debit card as well - the two cards run alongside each other, result! i should have done this earlier got robbed by ryanair on my last booking, was concerned about getting electron though as you can't use it everywhere, the fact i can have both on the same account i'm well happy about. (may i recommend smile if anyone is unhappy with their bank, customer service is top notch).

I rank Smile, and whilst I agree that their customer service is really good, they weren't able to issue an Electron card for use in conjunction with a Visa Debit card. They said this would open the account to fraud. (?). However they were able to create a new current account, and then I can request an Electron card for that. Seems a crazy process but there you go.

Return flights I want to book with Ryanair are 0p. Taxes £2. One bag £24!! Still, getting to Luton is more expensive. I curse and despise Ryanair's sales tactics, but I'm begrudgingly grateful as they are the only carrier going to my destination and it allows me to see my 9yr old daughter.

    Thanks MSEs!

Don't take bags so you don't need to check in. The more weight a plane has the more fuel it uses. It will be cheaper and less hassle for you and better for the envirmonment. Hard with small kids though with all the paraphernalia you have to take. So no bags and no kids!! (only joking about the latter before someone bites my head off)

By your logic, there should be a fat/big boned tax then. I know a couple who adds up to 15 stone, less than some people weigh!

18 stone here but also 6ft 3in tall.

So with my Co-Op Visa Electron card in place its very tempting to start booking some 1p flights with Ryanair with no bags just to think how much I will be costing Mr Micheal O'Leary and the other members of the Ryanair board.....

I decided to wait until I had been living in my current address for longer than 6 months. Am I being over cautious? I really want an Electron but my bank (Natwest) doesn't issue them

I also have an account with that load of crooks/conmen at NatWest/Royal Bank of Scotland (led by that arch crook and now ex CEO Sir Fred Goodwin) but that didn't stop me opening an account with Co-Op Cashminder.

If you have been at your address a while Co-Op Can do all the identity checking on the phone but in your situation they will want you to send in a bill or a driving licence etc at the current address to prove you live there but you should not have to wait six months as it is a Basic Bank Account so there is no credit worthiness checking done. They will only refuse an account to those convicted of fraud or identity theft as far as I know. Lack of credit worthiness is not an issue for them as with Visa Electron you can only spend funds you actually currently have in the account and that can be directly verified online by the retailer.
  • Atomised,

    I followed Desperado + phoned the co-op this morning on 0845 602 7057 .

It took just 5 minutes, they wanted my name, d.o.b and address plus my current bank account number with the bank that I have been with for years.

Very simple and very easy and no Indian Call Centre confusion to boot!

I can now use the internet to transfer money, use the Post Office and best of all not pay Mick O Leary and his PikeyAirways any more rip off card charges..:A

its hardly a con when theres link stating the costs for the card you are to use

it's pretty much bordering on being a con. Charging all but the most obscure payment method a huge percentage increase on their administrative costs is a blatant ploy at getting away with the headline-grabbing price advertising they were told to stop. Personally I don't understand why they do it - most people are wise to it now and it surely does nothing but infuriate the customers.

What racist twaddle. If this is what you think of Ryanair then use British Airways
I'll get you, my pretty, and your little dog too!
  • Just called NatWest. Unfortunately they no longer do the prepaid Electron 'Gift cards' mentioned in a previous post. Also, they don't do Electron Cards connected to bank accounts. Neither do Barclays. I'm now off to try Halifax/Coop.

No-one bought them that's why, did you read the charges?. Stick £200 on them and only £185-ish of spending power. £200 in cash = £200 spending power.
