I travel the same roads day in, day out.
If I fill up (full tank) with tesco I get around 47-49mpg.
If I fill up with ESSO diesel, I get 55 and somtimes 59 mpg.
I know a large number of folk who have noticed the same thing.
Tesco fuel is 2nd rate, watered down.
All fuel has to meet minimum standards and often comes from the same refinery with an extra 'shot' of additives to make it unique to each brand. Supermarkets also source their fuel from many different places so there is no blanket 'supermarket' grade fuel.
To say that Tescos fuel is 'watered down' is not accurate at all. I do 3-4k miles a month filling up from various retailers and there is very little differene in my MPG from one brand to another. Getting stuck in traffic has the biggest effect (as you would expect).0 -
I can't believe that people who are paying 91p per litre are moaning because they won't benefit from this card! It's going to be an absolute lifesaver for me - I estimate a saving of 8-9p so will make up the price of the card in no time at all. I live on one of the Scottish islands and having been paying over a pound per litre for more than a year, at the moment it's 106p (and that's at the 'cheap' place).
It's surprising that any garages here are participating in the scheme - I know that Esso previously withdrew its own payment card from here some years ago - they were saving us too much money so decided to put a stop to it.
Having said all this - and having checked on the Marmalade site that there is a participating garage here - I'm still not convinced it's true. Especially as I've just phoned them up to confirm they accept the card and was told to ring back on Monday when the boss is in.0 -
Declaration - Me again, I am one of the directors of the company behind Marmalade.
New Prices for week commencing 5/6/06 00:01
Diesel 93.9p per litre
Unleaded 93.9p per litre
In response to "oopspardon"
I am not sure which station is on your island but if it on the list on the web, it is part of the scheme. If you take up the scheme and find that you do not have a discount, please send me a message or email.
Our partners in this scheme already supply 5,000,000 litres every week, I am sure that a few pennies on supply on an island, will be lost in the system somewhere. That is the advantage of bulk buying.
Thank you Glowboy
This puts the pricing of supermarket fuel into perspective.
Finally
Thank you to the hundreds that have applied for both membership of Marmalade and fuel cards in the last few days.0 -

.
Don't want this thread to get too tied up with this debate, but given I travel the same route with just me in the car each day, I'd say that is a level playing field.
I know in-car mpg readings are not accurate, but you can't say that 49mpg on tesco should really be 54 and 55mpg on Esso should be 50 for example.
Inaccurate readings for both still maintains a level playing field.
When I say watered down, it's a figure of speech and I mean the quality isn't as good. I can only back that up with my own calculations and that of friends.0 -
philproc wrote:Diesel can be purchased at the prices shown below at all 960 TOTAL sites. However, diesel purchased through the 1300 BP and 600 Shell sites will be charged at an extra 2.94p per litre.
Week commencing 29/05/2006 - Prices in pence per litre:
Diesel 94.40p
Guess which petrol stations are near me:o adding the 2.94p gives 97.34 saving 1.65p/litre approx 82.5p/tank approx 12 fills to break even. I might save £10 a year but I didn't take into account supermarket petrol is usually cheaper than shell around here:mad:
Nice idea, worth it if you have Total garage nearby or do lots of miles:rolleyes:
philproc makes a critically important point here, yet it seems to be one that I am unable to find on the marmalade website - presumably you need to have joined to be able to see this clause, or otherwise I just have not found it.
Is anyone else able to confirm what he says about BP and Shell levying an additional charge on top of the price quoted by marmalde for fuel?

Not to worry - I've now found the area philproc was referring too!0

My 'local' supermarket fuel stations are 16 miles away.
I do not shop at supermarkets - but use my local butcher, etc.
My local fuel station is just 1 mile away. Petrol is 98.9 ppl
I've signed up to Marmalade.
With Marmalade I will pay 93.9 ppl (based on this weeks figure) Thus saving me 5p per litre or £2.25 on an average fill up. I will have re-couped my original investment in 4 fill ups.
At the end of the day - and the website clearly says it - Use the card where it will save you money, and don't where it won't.
Obviously if you are lucky enough to have cheaper fuel then you do not need this card - but don't knock it for those of us who it will benefit!!

Why are some people taking the view that those of us who are saying it is of no benefit to us are knocking the card/scheme ?
I for one was not - purely saying that it is of no benefit to me - no more no lessHate and I do mean Hate my apple Mac Computer - wish I'd never bought the thing
