The Great 'Student Discounts' hunt

  • shoezone is another one...10% in there

with some places like new look, you can get student discount, but only if you spend over a certain amount. i discovered this by accident....looking for shoes for the chirstmas prom, and i couldnt decide what colour shoes to wear. bought a pair in BHS and a pair in new look (both were in the sales, and the two pairs together cost less than £20). anyhoo, i ended up wearing the bhs ones and taking the new look ones back for a refund. even though i had had student discount when i paid, i was refunded the full amount. i didnt question it (a free £1.50 is not to be sniffed at, and if it was a mistake, it was theirs, not mine...) so i dont know whether this is policy or not, but i thought i'd share the story with you. im rambling now, so i'll move on!

i find that a lot of places wont advertise the fact that they do student discount, so it really does pay to ask absolutely everywhere, and challenge places that refuse as to why not...they often give you a bit off for being cheeky and standing up for yourself.

its surprising mind, the 'studenty' shops that dont give discount...H&M for instance, argue that their clothes are cheap enough. they might think so, but on a tight budget, there is no such thing as 'cheap'

New look are stingy! some claim they dont do it while others say you have to spend a certain amount - all lies! i got discount off a £5 bag! you just have to hold your ground! keep pushing at them! :D

I've never had a problem with New Look actually - I just present them with the card and ask for the discount. Don't forget - this time of year and in the New Year - DP's tend to offer 15 rather than 10% off!

Office Shoes and Qube also do a 10% discount:D

i work for a FE college that also runs a few full time HE programmes and anyone at our college can have a NUS card as long as they pay the correct fee. so even if they're doing a 2 hour a week evening course they can apply for a NUS card.

    How do you apply?
  • For those travellers amongst you, the London Hospital for Tropical Diseases Travel Clinic offers 10% discount of travel jabs like rabies and yellow fever. Just show your NUS card when you pay.

    Website http://www.thehtd.org
  • You can always pay a tenner for an NUS extra card - you can apply online at https://www.nusextra.co.uk and that gives you an nus. It's well worth it, because there are extra discounts too.
  • Just thought I'd add that if you've got a Somerfield near you they give you 5% off yer groceries inc alcohol:beer: . You've got to show them your student card and they give you a somerfield discount card. 5% off all yer groceries throughout your student life is a pretty big saving.

    Happy shopping:T
    UPDATE

For those of you who cant seem to get the discount card from the store if you contact their customer services they will help you out and should send you a card. I use Somerfield in Sheffield City Centre and that is where I got my card which I can use in any Somerfields (that I have been to so far). Somerfields may also be more expensive than some other stores but they also have some good special offers and if your buying booze then they prices are usually pretty similar where ever you go. Using the card ontop of offers like buy 1 get 1 free etc gives a great discount. Hope this helps.:D :D
