Morning off to work in a mo, hopefully to peace and quiet:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Skinny cow has too much sugar for a diabetic so don't touch them as strangely some yoghurts do, they say low fat and add more sugar for the taste and a lot of the WW ready meals have too much sugar in, have to read every label to see what I can eat which is a bit time consuming but hey saves the cals:D

hezza I hope there is some good news soon

    mirry it does get better;)

    Rosie:j:j:j:j:j

Like I said before I have no objections to all in ones, it is just that a couple of summers ago I wore one that covered me from neck to ankle:rotfl:and my 2 spanish friends wore lovely bikinis, they never said anything to me because they are my dearest friends but one of them gave me a very fleeting look that said 'you are not as old as you look in that so why are you wearing that?' I can still see the look, no harm was meant but I remember it so am going with them again and wearing a bikini, fair enough it is black and high waisted but it is an improvement for me :D

The beach we go to is a topless beach and 2 beaches down is a nudist beach, now that is a step too far:rotfl:having said that though my mum used to go topless now she is 84 she is sparing us thank goodness:rotfl:but she never had a problem with just wearing here bottoms and plastering olive oil into her skin to get a tan:D

Eric , are you on the Harcombe diet then ?
The skinny cow sandwiches are lovely , last time I bought them for me the kids ate them all .
Its funny how the Harcombe diet makes you feel isnt it ,
I walked into the supermarket and was blown away by all the processed foods we eat.

Day 4 today and my husband said to me this morning,
that my face looks slimmer :).

no and yes, i agree with some of it but not other bits of it, but its hard to get the full picture as most of the info on the web just ends up with buy my books ;)

I read some fascinating research where they where looking at the changes in brain wave patterns in first lab rats and then human subjects who where eating a high fat high refined sugar diet. They showed that this kind of diet changes brain activity and mri scans showed the pattern to be very similar to a heroin addicts so you end up with the cravings and chemical release reward pattern. With the right combinations of fats and sugars they could literally get the rats to become super super morbidly obese, they just wouldn't stop eating, and it appears humans respond in a very similar fashion, with rapid cravings for this kind of food, mood swings, feeling listless and depression.

Then there's the research that came out of studying a popular eat as much meat and fat and avoid carbs diet. This diets theory was completely debunked as snake oil and they could not see its so called effects in a controlled environment (they actually put 2 identical twins into identical sealed rooms and monitored the CO2 and body function outputs). However what they did discover was that protein especially in large amounts is an appetite suppressant! (Generally the dieters where just subconsciously eating less). So we eat lots of lean protein. You can test this yourself, cook a meal of a lot of lean meat (nothing else), Chicken, Tuna, lean Salmon are great but lean red meats are fine as well and see how much you can actually eat before you feel full, for me it was about half of what i expected i could eat and about 1/3rd of the calories of a "normal" meal for me at the time.

So for the first two weeks of my diet I "detox" from foods that cause cravings, I stop taking all refined sugars, reduce fat as much as possible (its also energy dense), I stop taking caffeine (tea, coffee, caffeinated cola) as this causes the release of sugar from liver (the energy boost) and unbalances the body which can cause cravings, I stop eating cheese (my true love in life) as again this can release hormones and create cravings, and the big killer chocolate. Chocolate stimulates the release of serotonin (and a couple of other hormones) which can cause addictive behaviour.

As a side note I suspect some of the popular diets know this which is why they make there own "healthy" snacks which contain a lot of the above which i suspect is to keep there dieters in a permanent YO YO state so they keep on paying subscriptions. Just my theory of course, zero evidence, but do you know anyone who is a member of one of these clubs and has been YOYO'ing for years? I know people who have been doing it for decades with no permanent result.

As for me, after around day 4 i get a monster headache for 24-36 hours as the detox kicks in (mainly from chocolate and caffeine withdrawal) then after 2 weeks I have ZERO cravings. Gone are the desire to eat masses of sweet stuff after every meal even thou I had just eaten 1500+ cals. Gone are the desire to have mid meal snacks, Gone is the desire to graze whilst watching TV. It becomes easier to eat normal meal patterns, and as time goes on over weeks 2-6 meal sizes become halved, you actually notice you start to feel full whilst eating a meal, which is a new experience :)

This works for me very well, would be interesting to see if it worked for anyone else. I eat normal healthy food and minor processed food like tinned fish (very low fat), lots of protein including lean red meats, veg, fruit, lots of carbs (I avoid a lot of bread since glueten is a separate issue and there's always a risk with bread of loading it with butter and cheese :)). Im rarely hungry now and it does not even feel like dieting after 2 months.

And please note I am not knocking any diet system, well except those that are bloody dangerous long term, ie the ones where you drink shakes / meal replacements (often loaded with refined sugars) or encourage you to eat tonnes of fat with clogs the old arteries.

As i have said before its 90% about state of mind, being in a happy place with alot of determination, and 10% finding a system you can live with every day for years, that works for you.

As a side note I do question the logic of say going without a food type for 4-6 days to loose weight and then to blow all the hard work with "rewards" of bad foods. Remember 99% of diets fail (government's own statistics) because people diet and dieting does not work, what you need is lifestyle change and that has to be permanent.

    So in summary

    Eat:
Lots of Carbs (not to much bread) 33%
    Fruit and veg Veg 33%
Lots of lean protein of all types 33%

    Avoid:
    Refined sugars
Oil (keep it to under 10% of diet and saturates to under 2-3%, use olive oil, light olive oil where you can)
    Caffeine
Cheese (not sure if low fat cheese causes cravings)
    Chocolate
Alcohol (I don't drink :p, as much fun as it is it adds nothing but calories to your diet)

And get an actifry if you can for low fat tasty wedges / chips :)

And exercise at least 3 times a week for 30 mins at a partially breathless level (work up to it)

for me artificial sweeteners do not cause cravings, so I do drink it, normally lightly flavoured waters, cream soda, ribena really light (yummy) etc, no colas ... decaf light colas maybe alright, never actually tried them. I also drink fruit teas (caffeine free) instead of tea / coffee at work etc.

Just in case this turns out to be a million pound idea, the above "lifestyles diet" is copyright Eric P

Hi Eric , well I would certainly buy your book :rotfl:.

I agree with everything you say , its amazing how filling this food is
I cant finish my meals now and dont snack , dont miss sugar at all
and cant believe it. Last night my daughter had a bowl of sweets and I found myself reaching for one and suddenly thought
"what are you doing", managed to stop myself yet cant understand why I did that, cos I really didnt want it.
    It must be habit ?

Read this article today and found it interesting .....

    Hi all!

Rosie - I'm with you on the fab lollies! Yum! Your travel plans sound amazing.

BB I don't do the sunbathing thing either, for me my swimsuits are just for swimming (and my diving classes). I go for sporty ones, the plainer the better :)

Beanielou I'd pay about a tenner for wellies, but cheaper if poss?

I've had a temporary gym membership this week, so I've done lots of hours on the cardio & weights machines, an exercise class (Zumba - SO not me!!!), swimming every other day, plus my usual diving class yesterday. So not much to add to my cycling & running sig totals this week (I don't count treadmill and exercise bike kms), but back onto that during March, after which I'll review all 10 of my half yearly exercise objectives :).

Calorie intake has been on track, and there's nothing to worry about weight wise, should be on for a STS or thereabouts at the next monthly check. It's all good! :D

    Have a great weekend everyone!

morning everyone , another cold day here .

    Day 3 for me

I find I am thinking about food alot , but in a good way.
have some chicken drum sticks for lunch today with salad.
Just tried some herbal tea bags without milk :o , but dont they say
you need to try things more than 3 times to start liking it ?

HoneyD ,, well done with your weight loss , thats a good loss :)
    any tips ?

    Thanks :)
I think Ive posted before with changes Ive made but will tell again lol.
I cut down my portion sizes, try to eat better things so lots of veg and if I have something like a pie I will have loads of veg to offset the baddies lol. Sweets, chocolate etc are all treats and eat rarely (though atm not so rare but working on getting back into this again) Pizza etc is rare (should be more rare lately haha). Cheese is rare too and I only really started to lose more weight per month after cutting that out. I let myself have 2 biscuits a day - digestives mainly.
I changed my milk to fully skimmed, my margarine to flora light, my bread to weightwatchers malted danish, I eat fruit every day. Snacks must be fruit or low fat yoghurts.
I work now too so Im walking for hours each day and sometimes up to10 miles or more which I hope is helping! If I think of more I'll add it later lol.
    Hope that helps :)

Dmv - will you be on a waiting list in case any vacancies arise? Do you have any current school experience e.g. volunteering? If you do start working as a learning assistant you could try to get on an NVQ - that seems to help a lot with getting on the PGCE too. It seems to be almost mandatory to do a year as a learning assistant now before the PGCE! Good luck, enthusuastic people like you are just are just what we need.

Hi granny, no not on a waiting list, very much a case of "sucks that the weather delayed your interview by 6 weeks meaning your second uni is full but oh well thats life". I have quite a bit of volunteering experience as a TA, as well as doing 2 weeks full time in one block across all ages, I have also been doing 1 day a week from september till now (too much uni work to do to carry it on for the next couple of months) and will be picking up a personal reference from the class teacher who I have been working on, who is genuinely disappointed that I didnt get on and has said i was better than she was when she got onto a pgce after working as a TA for years. Oh well. I know there are appropriate NVQ's (met quite a lot of volunteer TA's doing them) but I see it as a step back. I will graduate this summer with a very high 2:1 or a first class (unlikely to carry that on now tho with too much work not enough time syndrome!) honours degree so really dont want to "go down" to something that I know friends are doing who never even got A levels, would really make me feel like ive wasted 5 years (a levels and a degree) of my life and got in a whole load of debt only to be doing what people who have been doing supermarket jobs since school are doing.

I know that sounds very horrible, and no offence to anyone working in a supermarket a jobs a job and at this rate that will be me in a few months, but I have made life choices and put in a whole lot of work to get my degree in this subject because its what i want to do. Doesnt seem fair that I should now have to do the same course as people I know who have worked minimum wage since 16 and got drunk every night on their wages :(

    Rant over...lol

Going to a state circus thing tonight (no animals, more acrobatic stuff i think) as something a bit different to do, only booked tickets yesterday. £13 a go after student discount and as i have a glue ear (on prescribed painkillers it hurts so much) and a cold and am working flat out for fridays hand in i think i deserve to get out. Food today has been a sausage sandwich so far, will prob have soup in a bit. Have a good one all x

I quite like it MC, except for the price, I'm more inclined to a chainstore sale type swimsuit. Maybe grannydom gives you a different outlook on swimming costumes. I go for low legs and not too much boob falling out.

I bought mine from Sally in north Yorkshire:http://www.amplebosom.com/acatalog/Triumph_Swimwear.html

I wear the Triumph Doreen swimsuit for aqua-aerobics because it does give my boobs more support when jumping about in the water. I don't agree that it's only for the 80+! Some of the women who go to aqua-aerobics wear a bra inside their cozzy, so obviously they feel they need that bit of support.

I wear a different one for swimming classes. It's a Tweka, also available from Sally, and these are meant to be 'for serious swimmers'. http://www.amplebosom.com/acatalog/Tweka_Swimwear.html
