I've had several bm's and decided to research in depth which one was the best.Everywhere I looked on the internet said Panasonic 253 so I got one. (Amazon was the cheapest when I bought mine). The performance is far superior to any other I've had and it is quieter too. The programmes are long but that may be why the bread comes out so well. Short quick cook programme is 2 hrs. Machine is worth the extra cost- it is more expensive than many others.
Bread flour- Cheapest is Lidl at about 50p and it works well, Tesco own brand is good too, the strong white is cheap. Morrisons wholemeal is only 69p. Look out for special offers on the stuff that is usually a lot more expensive (Hovis etc) and buy several as long as they have a long best-before date on them.Store wrapped in a plastic bag.0 -
PLEASE help me! I want a new breadmaker to run alongside my old one (very average Prima model). I'm prepared to spend whatever is needed to get the best value overall - I run a guest house so the machine is likely to get a lot of use over the summer months. I've read through these forums and thought the Panasonic SD253 was the one for me. Then I saw that the Russell Hobbs Ultimate is on offer at Argos and seems to get equally good write-ups (plus it can make jam which could be useful in my line of work). I was just about to order it from Argos, when I saw they have a stainless steel Morphy Richards Fastbake down from £69.99 to £46.99, and Morphy Richards have a huge fan base on this forum!. Other than being a bargain, it also has the advantage of having a drop down blade so you aren't left with the usual hole in the middle. So now, I am completely
!!!
If anyone can give me some feedback, I would especially like to know : how noisy are they (don't want to wake the guests up at 4am!); what shape the loaves are (my Prima produces those unattractive tall ones); how good are the jam programmes?
Thank you so much in advance.

Can't help you with the actual model, but I'll be watching this thread with interest. We've asked for a breadmaker for christmas0

Hi,
Sorry, I have no experience of Russell Hobbs BMs, but I replaced my worn out cheapie (Hinari?), with a 253 and I must say it is brilliant. The only failures have been my fault.

Hi
There are quite a few threads on different breadmakers around the place - many of them collected in the link below. You'll have to cherry pick through them all though to find what you need...

I have the morphy richards fastbake and I love it! I've been using it daily for a month now and I've had great results every time.
It's quieter than I expected, but this is my first breadmaker so I don't know how it compares to others....the sound won't waken anyone up, but the smell might. It does produce a 'tall' loaf, which doesn't bother me as it gets sliced for sandwiches as soon as it's cooled. I'm afraid I can't help you with the jam making as I haven't tried it yet.
Here are some recent threads that might help:
Bread Maker - worth it?
I am in love with my Panasonic breadmaker
The Morphy Richards fastbake BM Club
And of course, there are lots of recommendations in The Complete Breadmaking Collection.

Thanks for the link to 'The Complete Breadmaking Collection'. I'd never seen that as I always searched for 'breadmaker' instead of 'breadmaking'.
My brain is really going to overheat now ...!0
