And so you might think I'm irresponsible but on a totally clear motorway, not near any junctions, with absolutely no other traffic and I can see ahead for over a mile and the road is dry and the weather is clear I consider it safe. If there is other traffic, or any other potential hazard, even a bridge that someone could drop something off, then it's not safe and I'd slow down. Speed does not kill it's the driver's faliure to recognise and react to a hazard that causes accidents and exessive speed merely compounds the risk and makes the results worse.
It won't change the statistics a lot if everyone were to drive within the speed limits but still allow the idiots to drive recklessly.
Obviously you are above the laws that other people follow and not one of those stupid arrogant idiot know it all drivers that think they can continue to get away with it. Are you a man by any chance, or a policeman, they like speeding too.:rotfl:The curve that can set a lot of things straight is a smile0 -

Yes but the poster said he had travelled at more than twice the legal limit on a motorway!Weight Loss - 102lb0 -
Seek and you will find!
If you think of the popular tourist traps, such as Portugal, Greece, Spain and Italy, the chances are you'll be looking at an accident rate that makes banger racing look tame. Motorways, for example, are the safest roads anywhere in Europe, yet in Portugal they account for 14·1 deaths per billion vehicle kilometres, followed by Italy (12·8), Austria (8·9), Belgium (7·2), France (5·4) and Germany (4·5). The figure for Britain is just two.
Consider the fatalities per million population and, again, mainland Europe is way ahead of Britain. Portugal again tops the tables with 243 deaths per million, shading Greece on 212, Spain with 151 and Italy on 110. But that's not to say you're safer staying in northern Europe. France records 152 deaths per million people, Belgium 147, Austria 119 and Germany 95. The rate for Britain is a mere 59. And while Portugal's total fatalities are slightly more than four times the number killed on our roads, the number of people driving there is a mere tenth of the UK figure.

Well what do you know I posted this in response to somebody comparing German and UK road safety statistics and now their post has disappeared. Obviously thought better of itDemocracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote.

Its not very safe if you have a tyre blow out or your engine management system decides to play havoc or your power steering develops a fault or something goes wrong with the braking system or an animal suddenly runs out in front of you .. fortunately in (most of) those scenarios the only one likely to splattered all over the motorway is yourself (unless you are irresponsible enough to do this with someone else in the car) .. however less fortunately some people apply the same logic to built up areas and think they are safe to do 30-40mph were a load of children are playing etc.wobbley wrote:OK then, if speed kills I should be dead as a doornail ! If you want to race and have fun go to a race track. It is a great day out, you get to go as fast you your nerves allow ... most people realise that they just are not as good a driver as they think they are.
Even the highly trained police can sometimes make a mistake at speed .. as can racing drivers ... always remember Ayrton Senna was on a nice simple part of the racing track when he turned the sterring wheel and nothing happened .. not much you can do when travelling at speed.

I've got to say I am fed up with people who speed. I've got 6 points on my licence (not for speeding) so I always make sure I am within the speed limit but people drive so close to me that it is dangerous. I will not go over the speed limit no matter how close they are, but I don't like the fact that they think they can imtimidate you like this!!0

ceebeeby wrote:OP - why don't you write an appeal letter - you could make it apologetic, explain the circumstances etc. explain that you're a taxi driver - made a mistake, won't let it happen again .... that type of thing? It's only one letter and one stamp and the most they can do is to say no ....? At least you've then tried??
Dont think thats gonna cut any ice considering the previous six points didnt stop the OP from letting it happen again

No one EVER had an accident just because they were going fast. Not making allowances for road conditions, poor observation, driving too close, etc. are all things that cause accidents. Of course it is 'easier' to drive more safely when going slower but you don't 'have' to drive slow to be safe. A good experienced motorist can go well above the speed limit in the right conditions and still be a lot safer that 90 year old 'Granny' in her Micra teetering along at 25mph, BUT - she can't see further than her wipers ! Or boy racer in his Subaru WRX that has no respect for other road users and just wants to show off his 350+bhp to his mates.
It's like saying guns are dangerous - they aren't, but add an idiot behind the trigger and it's lethal.
Four years ago i was stopped at a roundabout just about to set off when i was hit from behind by a 67 year old woman who was clocked at doing 70 in a 30 zone. She left me severely disabled for the rest of my life. Her excuse? She wasn't concentrating as she'd had a bad day and was rushing to get home.0
