Sorry, accidents don't just happen. They're caused by people not driving correctly.
If it was reasonable to fine me for doing 35mph then every person who causes an accident deserves to be fined too.

Gorgeous
That's slightly simplistic. There ARE accidents which are genuinely accidents - a tyre blows out, a wheel falls off, part of a load falls onto the carriageway, a gust of wind blows a cone across the road, etc.... so there isn't always an individual driver to blame.
That said, I think Ivan's suggestion is stupid as there would be no reward at all for sensible driving given that the courts are just not involved (and, to be honest, shouldn't be involved) in most accidents.0 -
I to drive a cab , clean licence for last 4 years, but i wish the bikes would get off the road, and not just a traffic lights when it suits them ,do you also realise what bike lanes are for? you either ride on the road and insure the damn thing or use it at home on a stand for exercise, the pavement is for pedsetrians not 2 wheeled maniacsVoyager2002 wrote:I agree with all of the above comments. If you want to drive, whether for business or pleasure, then keep to the rules. If you are unwilling to obey the rules, then I hope that you get banned as soon as possible. Personally, I get around by bicycle and am sick and tired of taxi drivers and other "skillful" drivers who regularly put my life at risk in order to shave 30 seconds off their travel time. I wish we could have speed cameras everywhere!Div 1 Play Off Winners 2007

MMD, I am not understanding why you think there should be a reward for sensible driving .. we are all meant to drive sensibly all the time, sensible driving should not rewarded but wreckless driving should be punished.MarkyMarkD wrote:That said, I think Ivan's suggestion is stupid as there would be no reward at all for sensible driving given that the courts are just not involved (and, to be honest, shouldn't be involved) in most accidents.
Your insurance probably costs about 30-50% more to cover people who do not have insurance or make false claims. There are many ways to scam insurance companies and they are getting much more prevalent and the only person suffering is the innocent careful driver. Why should somebody who has no insurance be allowed to claim off somebody elses ... yes they go to court get a slap on the wrist for having no insurance and then make thousands on false whiplash claims .. jeez some cars even inherit several passengers between the time of the accident and the time of the whiplash claims. Although one of the growing scams now is someone deliberately disabling the brake lights and jamming the brakes on in front of another car causing an 'accident' ... of course it is ALWAYS the car behinds fault.
The concept of self insurance means you can insure yourself for as much or as little as you like or nothing. It puts the onus and responsibility back onto each individual driver to provide cover that suits their purpose and lifestyle and stops many of the false claims that add so much to our premiums.

I understand your point however what you do not understand is that within your line of thinking you have managed to justify to yourself that driving at a wreckless speed on a public road was safe, you are trying to justify your picking of which laws you are willing to obey or not obey ... I think you will find that the police and the courts would agree with me on this one.wobbley wrote:Yep, like I said you don't understand the point.
Who is to say that just round the next corner there was not a car broken down on the hard shoulder .. just as you had a blow out and you manged to splatter the family all over the inside lane. The only thing is that you would also probably be splattered and would not have to face up to the consequence of your actions.
If we are allowed to pick and choose which laws we want to obey then there is one about covetting thy neighbours a$$ I would like to be reviewed as well.
if you are irresponsible enough to do that sort of speed on a public road then 'Yes'.And you call ME a fool !!!!!!!!!!

wobbley wrote:Yeah - right, 'another holier than thou' merchant.
I did it a couple of times over 15 years ago and am using it as an example - for gods sake! The way most of you are hammering me you seem to think I drive like that all the time. READ THE POST
Has every poster slating me for admitting to doing 140 never gone above a speed limit in their life? How many of you have ever gone above 70 mph ? How many have ventured up to 100mph because you just wanted to top the '100' ? How many have been well above that, a good few - I bet.
For most of you thinking I'm an idiot, either - You haven't read my post and understood that the conditions were SAFE. Or - one of those that say it's never safe to go that fast - you've probably never been that fast - so you DON'T KNOW !
And for the record I was a professional driver for nearly 20 years (and I don't mean a bus or taxi driver !) and have done over three quarters of a million miles on HM Highway. Last (and only) points - 3 back in 1987. Last blameworthy accident back in 1991 (but other driver was in a Merc !) So from an insurance point of view (Hmmm, maybe |I'm digging my own grave here!) I am regarded as fairly safe. I'm NOT the Subaru owning, 'foot to the floor' and 'sod everyone else I'm above the law' lunatic that you seem to think I am.
you are absolutely right on one aspect - I have never been that fast - I am just a tad more sensible than to do something that stupid - its really less of a "holier than thou" attitude - more of a "more responsible than thou attitude"! So what if you have only got 3 points in your illustrious driving career - all that means is you are lucky not have been caught out more - its nothing to boast about.
But hey- as long as its a merc driver you slam into at 140 mph on the motorway, what the hell - without a doubt it'll be his fault eh?????????????
As for the rest - Ivan has summed it up superbly in his posts so I will leave it at that.
PS - Like I said before - I don't want to get into a feud with you that affects other threads cos I agree with you on many other things - its just that speeding is something (for personal reasons) I feel very very strongly about so you will have to excuse my ranting.0 -
Sorry - but if you take the risk of exceeding the speedlimit, regardless of day or time, then as well as the 'calculated risk' you are taking of your own and others lives you are also taking the 'calculated risk' of being caught.
I drive within the limits or under. You may find me an 'annoying driver' - but 6 years ago I hit a child. The child was pushed out into the road by another child whilst waiting at a bus stop. I'd already taken the precaution of slowing to just over 20, but still was not able to react in time. I hit the child with the wing of my car, whilst desparately trying to swerve. The childs right arm & shoulder were completly shattered. I was devastated.
Speeding causes accidents - you can not react in time.
My DH works for the ambulance service. Accidents cost lives and many thousands of pounds.

I cant believe the arrogance of some people who think its safe to speed, well I hope those who regularly speed or drive well above the speed limit are banned permanently.
Regardless of time of day, the speed limit is there for a reason. If you ignore that then you will ultimately get what's coming to you.
I much rather prefer idiots off the road than some poor begger hit by a reckless driver who's only thinking of there selfish own interests.
I drive within the speed limits and often below depending on the road conditions and perceived danger but I nearly always get some clown who is right up my backside even when I set off from my own house at 20mph as it is a 20mph zone and some plonker comes from no where clearly well above that speed limit to only find I am there slowing the idiot down.
I actually don't give two monkey's about those who endanger others and that regularly speed, and yes as I live on a taxi drivers route, I see nearly always them speeding, so I think some of them should loose there livelihood, rather than a person being knocked down by them exceeding the speed limit.
We don't have cameras in my location the only county in the whole UK I believe that doesn't have any, and I very much welcome speed cameras, I have asked for them before only to be turned down.
I agree there should be more Police presence on the roads and fines should be increased to pay for them.
I have also seen a child get knocked down a few years back just up from where I live funny enough it was a taxi driver that hit them, although I don't think on this occasion they were at fault, hence why I campaigned to get our street that has two schools on as a 20mph speed limit.
My daughter had a friend knocked down the other week by a elderly lady driver who tried to drive off without stopping. The girl of 15 is in intensive care as we speak, life is too precious, PLEASE slow down.0 -
silverfoxdude wrote:just the usual response then . like i said i am a taxi driver i do not drive over the speed limit in built up areas when there is a chance of pedestrians being around ect.
If you're a manchester taxi driver i find this VERY difficult to believe :eek:0 -
Remind me never to book a ride home with you driving, mate.0
