STRIKING posties last night vowed to keep the mayhem for the Royal Mail going past CHRISTMAS.
The threat - as 42,000 staff walked out nationwide at 4am yesterday - came as 78,000 more were poised to join them today.
And unions announced the 48-hour strike will be followed by a THREE-DAY stoppage from next Thursday.
Mark Palfrey, of the Communications Workers Union, declared grimly: "We've got no alternatives - even if that includes striking past Christmas."
The chaos for Christmas deliveries loomed amid fears the mountain of undelivered letters and parcels will reach 200million by the end of next week.
Yesterday some vans defied picket lines.
Drivers ignored around 40 banner-waving strikers in Birmingham.
But the CWU insisted the strike over pay, jobs and modernisation was "solidly supported".
The walkout followed the collapse of 11th hour talks to avert it.
The Royal Mail accused strikers of holding the post to "ransom" and vetoed a union offer of binding talks at conciliation service Acas.
As big firms like internet giant Amazon scrambled to get mail delivered privately, Gordon Brown blasted the "self-defeating" strike.
The PM said: "Instead of striking, workers and management should be sitting round the table."
Bosses warned that if the post strikes drag on, small businesses - particularly online retailers who depend on Christmas gift deliveries - could go to the wall.
Stephen Alambritas, of the Federation of Small Businesses, fumed: "Customers need to be confident that their orders will arrive in time for Christmas."
Business Secretary Lord Mandelson hit out at union "insults" after being accused of trying to derail peace talks.
Royal Mail managing director Mark Higson described the announcement of more strikes as "appalling but sadly not surprising".
Yesterday the Tories pledged to privatise the Royal Mail.
Bob Crow, general secretary of the Rail Maritime and Transport union, joined the picket line outside the Mount Pleasant sorting office in central London.
He said: "I'm here to show solidarity."
This is getting blooming RIDICULOUS

Using The Sun for a factual quote is like asking a fish to objectively review the handling characteristics of a motorbike.
Although I do have a degree of sympathy for employee rights, the unions are using them as pawns to hold the country to ransom for their own political intent.
I blame the unions, not the individual posties. This union action will have long lasting and seriously detrimental consequences on the future of RM. They have already lost the Amazon and John Lewis contracts, as well as a few other high profile accounts, and I know that the courier companies are reaping the rewards at the moment. TNT are lobbying hard to be able to do the "final mile" delivery for items under 350g, and if all of these issues come to fruitition, then it will be near impossible for the Royal Mail to maintain any form of credibility or customer base when the strikes are over.
Billy Hayes will be a name to remember - he should be credited for killing the RM service as we know it. Such a shame his blog does not allow comments....<--- Nothing to see here - move along --->0 -

I'll post this here as there are multiple threads on the same topic
at 1.14 you will see a postie with 23 years service saying his duty is too long
yet he is delivering mail from his own car!!!
this is the sort of actions that RM rely on.it saves them on drivers, pouchboxes and vans
now if he is using his car but still cannot complete his duty on time?0 -

(got a parcel delivered, which turned out to be 2/2 and the other one has "gone missing" hope they enjoy my folding crates and pencil refils:rolleyes:)
Royal Mail and Parcelforce may lie about actually going to your house on occasion, but I've had far less trouble with them than any other mail service.
Our business couldn't survive without them, and selling off RM would just result in higher prices and worse overall service. This is my opinion. There are many others like it but this is mine:kisses2: Fiancee of the "lovely" DaveAshton :kisses2:I am a professional ebay seller. But by doing it in his car all he is doing is speeding up delivery and giving the managers a false idea of what can be done. By doing this he is just making the situation worse by giving false expectations.0
