Might be nice if they were all singing from the same sheet. Went in today, first of all told I had to have the designer frames, otherwise no cheaper second pair, then, finally, that I couldn't actually have any at all, because I need a prism or something and they can't do it. Asked about the difference between glass and plastic, told that I could only have plastic anyway, don't know why, so still don't know the difference, and couldn't have thinner lenses, as doesn't make any difference anyway. That was all before I found out I couldn't have any anyway. Oh dear! So, as long as the prescription is pretty simple, you should be ok, I suppose, otherwise it's back to the high street and exhorbitant prices.

I think you were unlucky. When I took in my prescription they were incredibly helpful and pointed out the prism measurement on my prescription - I had noticed it but didn't know what it meant. She looked it up and said that there would be no extra charge. So I got two pairs of varifocals with 1.74 index and prism for £170 which I think is brilliant. My last pair of Lindberg glasses cost £575 at a high street optician.

I have a -8.00 prescription I have purchased my glasses from asda 2 pairs designer frames with thin lenses 1.74 anti glare and scratch coatings £90 the optician in asda told me this will be ongoing to attract more people to the opticians and is part of there 10 year celebrations to be fair to all customers no matter what their prescription
  • I think it's best to phone before going to a store, one store never knew anything about it and quoted me a much higher price. I then got through to another who knew all about the new pricing structure.

I will get 1.67 lenses as standard (which still produce quite a thick lens on my prescription with astigmatism). But it was only £40 to upgrade to thinner lenses.

They also said they will give the lenses best suited to the frame eg. if you have a wider face and go for a semi-rimless, they may give a thinner lens.

That's interesting, perhaps I could try another branch. Somewhere around West London, perhaps Watford, have to have a look. It does seem to be a bit hit or miss at the moment, hopefully it will settle down soon. As an oap, paying 500 beer tokens for a pair of glasses is really not an option.

This has to be bargain of the year.

Being -6.5, my quote from D&H on a pair was £350 (and that price has been frozen for about two years - so they must be desperate for business). Even the online bucket shops wanted about £150 a pair.

Asda - two for £90, including 1.67 index lenses. Finally, i can afford the spare pair Mrs Enevel has been suggesting I get for years.

Well worth the trip into London (Isle of Dogs branch - opticians there was empty), and the return trip tp pick up.

    This is a great offer.

I got 2 pairs of rimless specs at 1.74 index (-6.0) in ASDA north acton london yesterday for £90. Seems to good to be true and i hope when I get the glasses I will not be dissapointed.

The optician also said that asda were trrying to be fair to all customers whatever their prescription and hoping they will stay at asda for their optician. This offer cannot last forever and is probably part of a long term strategy.

  • I could not get an appointment for a eye test at ASDA for weeks so yesterday using Nectar vouchers for a free eye test I went to D and A.
Asked for a quote on glasses where the price of the frames was £89 the total cost was £549!
Then went to ASDA with the prescription.
They would only let me have glass at 1.7 as that would be what they would normally prescribe for my eyes, so I went for the cosmetic upgrade to 1.9.
I got two pairs of Designer glasses with thin glass for £170, thats a huge saving. The Manager said that the promotion would run indefinitely.

  • I've just taken a look at the Asda Opticians website and discovered that their Night and Day contact lenses (same as I get form Vision Express) are half the price!!!!!! I can't believe it. Once I get a job and some money, I'll be swapping over, definitely! Also, going to get myself some new glasses from them. Who needs Optical Express and laser vision correction at £1200 per eye when the price of contacts and glasses has become affordable at long last!?
  • It's also worth bearing in mind that people who require 'complex' lenses (more than about -10) qualify for a free NHS sight test and an NHS voucher towards the cost of glasses (currently, for the princely sum of £13.70).
  • Hi, yes ours was instore opticians, here is a link for you to find stores near to you :)

    (link appeared here)

    Thanks for that kenny;
If you do use this link you must check the whole page; the geography of these people is very suspect as usual. They think Farnborough is on the south coast, Sheffield is in the North East and Leamington is in the South West!
