  • I was in the optical industry for 36 years before I retired; I can confirm that these prices are BELOW COST.
    This is a fantastic bargain.
The only way that ASDA could do this is by deliberately selling at a loss so as to gain market share.
Perhaps subsidising their optician departments from their sales of other stuff.
They certainly pay good wages to their opticians so the savings are not coming from there.
There must be some very worried people at Specsavers today; all the Specsavers stores are independantly owned franchises in competition with each other; it is not some giant conglomerate, although a lot of people think it is.
Many of the stores have only just been breaking even recently, they simply cannot match these prices, they all have to make a profit or they close.
I really cant guess how long this will go on for, maybe until Specsavers bite the dust?
If so will they then put their prices back up like they do when they kill off the small grocers.
If you really can get 1.74 index glasses for fifty quid GET THEM NOW THIS CANT LAST FOR EVER!!

Don't know my prescription but I went into my local Asda (Stevenage) yesterday and the woman said this was all new but a quick check and she said £40 extra for varifocal and this included thin lenses or £170 for 2 (£90 + £80). Have booked an appointment for an eye test next week and was toild that it is £15 but you get that back if you order glasses on the same day so that makes it an even better deal in my view.

How funny. I went around lunchtime and was surprised how empty it was - the sales assistant said it had been very busy that morning. The optician had no clients and was offering appointments to people.

As an aside, I couldn't believe how big the store is. I was going to do some shopping but as I didn't know where anything was I didn't bother. Some of the clothes looked interesting and I will look round properly when I go to collect the glasses.

We were there in the morning. I think because my eyes were so bad, an odd looking person passed me onto a very good/very helpful woman....I think she was a qualified optician, rather than someone who tells you that the frames look nice on you.

We never go to Asda, but some of the prices we thought were excellent.....especially compared to JS London Colney.

Was waiting for some money to come through before I got new specs, as I normally spend around £300 on getting thinned lenses ..... Asda here I come!

I am about -7 in each eye but also have a big astigmatism of about -5 in each eye, so glasses are normally very expensive - this looks a great deal. Has anyone with my level of astigmatism managed to get a pair for £50?

I have astigmatism plus -7.75 in my right eye, and a prism for a hole in the macular and was not charged any extra. If I had bought a pair of non designer frames and not had varifocals they would have been £50.

I have no idea what the end result will be as the glasses can take up to two weeks to arrive.

Hawt! - Thanks so much for this tip OP.

Trotted down to the Cardiff store this morning and bagged two designer rimless frames with 1.91 thin lenses for £90, inc UV and scratch resistance.

The girl who served me could believe the price - she seemed to think the super thin glass lenses cost at least £100 to manufacture. She didnt force selection based on prescription but said I could choose what I wanted.

FWIW, there didnt appear to be many thin lenses appearing in her drop down menu when she selected plastic lenses, and none above 1.67. There were tons more options for glass - 1.7, 1.74, 1.8 and 1.91.

Might be nice if they were all singing from the same sheet. Went in today, first of all told I had to have the designer frames, otherwise no cheaper second pair, then, finally, that I couldn't actually have any at all, because I need a prism or something and they can't do it. Asked about the difference between glass and plastic, told that I could only have plastic anyway, don't know why, so still don't know the difference, and couldn't have thinner lenses, as doesn't make any difference anyway. That was all before I found out I couldn't have any anyway. Oh dear! So, as long as the prescription is pretty simple, you should be ok, I suppose, otherwise it's back to the high street and exhorbitant prices.

Thats odd, at our store they had displays with printed cards on the stands, designer ones £70 or 2 for £90 and also non-designer £50 or 2 for £90 - which I personally thought I might as well get the designer as I wanted two pairs and it was the same price if you wanted two pairs regardless of designer or george frames.

It must be the luck of the draw my store was very helpful and actually suggested glass to me, sorry it didnt work out for you
