What sort of frames do they sell? Any designer makes? My nearest ASDA is around 15 miles away so can't just pop in to have a look.

I'm in the same boat. It would be good to know what designer frames they actually sell?

I imagine it's much like GlassesDirect and Specsaver which have "designer" glasses (i.e. mostly crap brands).

They don't have any top designers, no Chanel, Dior, Calvin Klein. They have Morgan, Jai Kudo, Golddigga (both frames I've chosen are Golddigga, I feel like a rap star :D) but I can't remember the others. The biggest saving for me was on the lenses so I was just desperate to find a couple of frames that were acceptable and small enough that my prescription would look as good as possible.

Hi Sue, what's your prescription? Do you have to fulfill a certain prescription to get the thinner lenses?

I think to get 1.7 you have to be at least -7 but I'm not certain. The thinner lenses would, I imagine, be available at a price but not included in the really cheap deal. The assistant had a huge chart which she referred to when ordering the lenses and that probably dictates the index of the lens.

My prescription is -11.25 and -11.75 so I got the thinnest.

God your hard to please :p

Just flicking through the asda mag and it mentions, as well as Morgan, Jai Kudo, Golddigga & Playboy, also Bench, Iceberg and Nike, personally I think all of these are wide ranging and popular high street designer brands and latest fashions that suit most people, top designers I personally find over the top (and overpriced)

Ordered today two pairs. Included in the price is whatever lens is appropriate for our vision eg -8 is 1.7 index. You can upgrade to thinner for £40.

Other brands include Lotus, Sean Puff Daddy whatever his name is, Terence Conran, Nike.

I went to the Watford Asda today and ordered two pairs. I had to pay an extra £40 per pair for varifocals and got the 1.7 index.

I am much happier going to an optician to get glasses rather than buying them off the internet as I have astigmatism and some other problems.

  • Thanks for this. Just been to have a look and DH has an appt for an eye test in 2 weeks.

Optician measured DHs pupil distance thingie too so he would know which frames were suitable.

He also told us this isn't a "special offer" this will be their prices from now on. Am going to take my prescription and treat myself too.

Thanks Kenny. Jai Kudo do nice, understated frames - I might go to look them. I usually go for an expensive brand because I tend to find they last a long time (after paying a lot for high index frames, I like my glasses to last at least a few years). Although the higher-end brands don't necessarily give better quality and durability.

On a side note, the online store Metsuki do nice higher-end designer frames at decent prices (well compared to the high street).

How funny. I went around lunchtime and was surprised how empty it was - the sales assistant said it had been very busy that morning. The optician had no clients and was offering appointments to people.

As an aside, I couldn't believe how big the store is. I was going to do some shopping but as I didn't know where anything was I didn't bother. Some of the clothes looked interesting and I will look round properly when I go to collect the glasses.
