    have anyone try St Austell's Asda? I am visiting them tomorrow for the glasses
    anyone had any good/bad experiences with them?
  • Just wanted to reassure anyone thinking about using Asda Opticians. They are excellent. Have just bought 2 pairs varifocals for me and 2 pairs varifocals for Mrs Crunch from Asda Cwmbran:
    1. Good range including 'designer' specs, including both half-frame and rimless, too;
    2. the higher the correction required, the thinner/lighter the lenses (remarkable!) as per Altarf's earlier post (page 7, post #136)
    3. well-trained staff;
    4. target was 10 days, specs were ready in 8 days;
    5. great care taken with fitting.
    Boots/D&A would have cost us around £600-£650 for the 4 pairs; Asda was £170 x 2 = £340 for 4 pairs.

    Clearly Asda are doing some marginal pricing to be so competitive, but this market has been raking it in for years and deserves a shake-up. For anyone like us wary of buying specs online then this is a good alternative.

    So what are you waiting for? (NB if you use their store locator be sure to read right through the list because they have put Leamington Spa, Nuneaton, Tamworth & Slough under "South West"!)

    I have no connection with Asda, but am just a happy customer (which for me is not usual....).:j
  • Another happy custom here Just to say I have just purchased 2 pairs of Varifocals 1 for me 1 for OH both for £250 many thanks to OP. Excellent service both done in 7 days .... bargin.

    Shopping around for glasses -

    Varilux Varifocal Physio Lenses 1.74 index with crizal coating

    Dolland want £490 for the lenses with a frame on top, say £150 for a frame, you are talking £640, I have a nectar voucher for 20% off and free eye test, so that makes the price £512.

    Asda charge £200 for the exact same lenses (not a similar cheaper inferior make). A designer frame is another £40 on top.

    A very busy independent optician near me, charges £340 for the lenses and a designer frame £50 to £130, still going to be £400 and that is with an end of line designer frame in the sale.

    Vision express have quoted me £400 for the lenses alone.

    Spec savers can sell me a pair of glasses with 1.74 varifocals for £300 in the 25% off sale but they couldn't say what brand of lenses I would be having. To be honest, I didn't like any of their frames and the Quicksilver frame I tried on, I have seen 4 people wearing it (2 colleagues at work, guy on check out at sainsburys, guy on buffett on train to work).

    Independent optician quoted me £410 for lenses and £165 for Paul smith frame, making £575, dont think they will be staying open for much longer.

    Asda are a good 40% cheaper than anyone else, not checked Tesco though.

    Asda are using Hoya Varifocals in 1.7 index. Therefore, not the same.

    I bought glasses from blackwood south wales store last week. the glases are lovely and the dispensing optican took time and made sure i had the correct frames for my face and they fitted me properly on collecting hem. they only took 4 days to come back. I was told(mum wanted a quote)that they usually use hoya, but can also use essilor lenses, and varilux physio.so they are actually quoting vor the same lenses.:j

    I've ordered two pairs, fantastic deal, the optician I thought was very good but the sales assistant who created the order was useless, even though she was meant to be a senior assistant,

  • Delighted with my two pairs of DESIGNER specs from Asda, December 09. Two pairs (both variafocal) one photocromic - paid an extra £40 each for even thinner lenses and absolutely delighted with look, specs and service. Thanks to all who posted on this forum which I read before I took the plunge - normally I go to Vision Express and the lenses for one pair would be £300. Both complete pairs from Asda were £240!!! Downside I usually get contacts in to choose frames but Sunday so optician wasn't available for this service. Lots of close looking but still best specs I have ever had very modern and couldn't be happier. Specwearer for 40 years:T

    Thanks for comments I am going to Asda Ipswich for eye test on 5th Jan and will hopefully be ordering 2 pairs of variafocals which I have never worn before.I have worn reading glasses for years but only needed to wear all time for a year.I thought it would be no prob changing glasses when wanting to read, big mistake it is driving me crazy, and neither pair are any good for laptop so have been using redispecs for that.
    Could you tell me what photocromic is please.Any other advice when ordering my glasses would be appreciated as I cant afford to get it wrong this time.

    My specs took an extra week to be delivered as the first pair sent were faulty (frame problems), but I still got them within three weeks and just in time for Christmas! I was impressed by the Assistant when I ordered the specs, she explained how different styles would suit me but also how they would suit the edge of the lens I needed; but the Assistant when I collected was rubbish - I shall have to take my tinted specs back another time for adjustment, they sit wonky on my nose! She had three goes at getting them straight and then told me to "get used to them" ... Still, overall I'm impressed - far cheaper than I used to pay for superthin lenses.
