Lemon car, private seller

Then again, can someone explain to me what are the rights of private buyer ? You buy a car privately and it starts fall apart in a month. What do you do ?
#Edit1# Could someone in the know of diesels explain to me the situation where 1.9l straight beats 2.2 turbo diesel ?
I'm afraid (as others have said), there is no comeback on a private sale. the onus is on you to check things out.
The turbo engine will run less compression to allow for the additional compression provided by the forced induction. If you're off boost, you'll make less power than a comparable normally aspirated engine. That's only one factor of course, no two engine designs are the same.0

Advice - should have kept the 306. Or get a real mechanic to go with you next time.Well, pardon me for not having english as my first spoken (written/typed?) language.
I know what DIPSTICK (aka oil measure thingy) is, in my language that is...
Several mechanics told me that turbo is alive, but for some reason kicking in very late, around 1800rpm (80 quid to discover that). Went to "licensed" garage - got "diagnosed" (yeah right) for 80 quid. They told me what first (friend) mechanic told me - turbo kicks in too late. I knew that already, but they never offered any solution to fix and i still had to pay. Had to "fix" back wiper, which cost me 50 quid, conked out in a day, now i'll need to get a replacement (and not pay fitting). Heating of back window still doesnt work, which of course adds to misting problem. Its like a driving effin' tank - rub glass with a sleeve enough to see general direction where you're going...
Demisting is done "right" way, no recirc, i have to ride with front windows down to get windshield demisted. As soon as you close them - misty again within couple of minutes. Driving with windows down is out of the question - my daughter is usually in the back...
Further to my expectations - 306 (that got replaced with Tino) had loads more power in low range RPM. It's 1.9l straight diesel, which digs holes in unpaved road at 800-1000 rpm if i jump off the clutch. So explain to me how 1.9 straight has more pull than 2.2 turbo ? Size wise cars are almost identical, Tino weighing at 300kg more, which is supposed to even out the difference in weight to power ratio between 306 and tino. Well, it doesnt.
The places i was climbing in third on 306 are barely climbable in second gear on Tino. Overtaking is possible only in third (b roads, i mean) revving the engine to hell.
Went to my mechanic today and got him to cancel all his work for one day to sort the sucker out once and for all. If he'd be just another mechanic i'd have to pay him there and then 500 quid.
As for paying to my friend (someone asked me this before), i always pay him, because he's also children to feed. I can get p!ssed out of the scull on friday night in his company (sometimes his treat too ), but that doesnt mean he doesnt need money. ), but that doesnt mean he doesnt need money.
These days 1.5k can buy you a good car. Thing of luck, sure. No, i'm not going to sue him. But i'd like to sue the @rse off the twit that stuck my friend and ultimately me with a lemon...0

You might not think £900 is a lot of money but to myself and quite a lot of people, it is, and when I buy a car I check everything as minor faults can sometimes be very costly if its a new car or older car it doesnt make a bit of difference faults can happen and be costly yes it might sound extreme doing a 1hr test drive but at least you will notice a lot of the faults as a lot of private sellers dont tell you all the faults.hartcjhart wrote: »who in their right mind is going to do a 1 hour test drive:eek:,especially on an older car,you really need your lumps felt, what are we going to do,take them to the coast for an day out:rotfl:

You'd be lucky round here to get one with enough petrol in to do a 1 hour test drive, when we used to sell cheapies they were topped up with a can. But as most of our customers were local they trusted us to not sell utter crap, just good value for money and we had lots of repeat custom.

Thats exactly my (and my friends) motive to buy unchecked - on trust. Local and all that...Apparently long standing trust. But some people get greedy on trust. And as Emell said - 900 for some oeple is a lot of money, and only a fraction of them know how far 900 can go. Remember i mentioned my dads Primera for 650 quid ? Well, back shocks for him cost 110 to get replaced.
I know people who bought amazing cars for even less than 650, which, with a wee bit more money makes a perfectly good usable car.0
