Well, pardon me for not having english as my first spoken (written/typed?) language.
I know what DIPSTICK (aka oil measure thingy) is, in my language that is...

Several mechanics told me that turbo is alive, but for some reason kicking in very late, around 1800rpm (80 quid to discover that). Went to "licensed" garage - got "diagnosed" (yeah right) for 80 quid. They told me what first (friend) mechanic told me - turbo kicks in too late. I knew that already, but they never offered any solution to fix and i still had to pay. Had to "fix" back wiper, which cost me 50 quid, conked out in a day, now i'll need to get a replacement (and not pay fitting). Heating of back window still doesnt work, which of course adds to misting problem. Its like a driving effin' tank - rub glass with a sleeve enough to see general direction where you're going...

Demisting is done "right" way, no recirc, i have to ride with front windows down to get windshield demisted. As soon as you close them - misty again within couple of minutes. Driving with windows down is out of the question - my daughter is usually in the back...

Further to my expectations - 306 (that got replaced with Tino) had loads more power in low range RPM. It's 1.9l straight diesel, which digs holes in unpaved road at 800-1000 rpm if i jump off the clutch. So explain to me how 1.9 straight has more pull than 2.2 turbo ? Size wise cars are almost identical, Tino weighing at 300kg more, which is supposed to even out the difference in weight to power ratio between 306 and tino. Well, it doesnt.

The places i was climbing in third on 306 are barely climbable in second gear on Tino. Overtaking is possible only in third (b roads, i mean) revving the engine to hell.

Went to my mechanic today and got him to cancel all his work for one day to sort the sucker out once and for all. If he'd be just another mechanic i'd have to pay him there and then 500 quid.

As for paying to my friend (someone asked me this before), i always pay him, because he's also children to feed. I can get p!ssed out of the scull on friday night in his company (sometimes his treat too :D ), but that doesnt mean he doesnt need money.

These days 1.5k can buy you a good car. Thing of luck, sure. No, i'm not going to sue him. But i'd like to sue the @rse off the twit that stuck my friend and ultimately me with a lemon...

The only "twits" (I'm sure we should be using another vowel) here are you and your mechanic.;)

Most of the stuff you have told us falls into one of two categories.

    1. Stuff you should have noticed on a test drive like lack of power, misting up (possibly).

    2. Stuff that's broken since you bought the car.

For 1. - you shouldn't have bought the car.

For 2. - that's hardly the seller's fault is it? Cars develop faults.

The ashtray in the 2002 Vectra SRi I bought for £1400 six months ago is now full.

Can I take it back for a refund?

    No power below 1.5k rpm,

Its a rather poor turbo diesel engine - it will have no power below 1500rpm until the turbo kicks in

Oil changed twice, still black (some *** wasnt changing oil regularly ?)

Oil will go black very quickly in a turbodiesel - it doesnt mean it hasnt been serviced regularly

Car is not drivable on a rainy day due to misting, i don't care if you think its a "small" problem, it affects main function of the item - getting from a to b faster than on foot. Which is kind of a purpose to a car.

    Then sort it out.

As for expectations. I'm already 1400 down and there's still no end to spending (apparently), while 306 cost me 1500 from private seller, and no more spendi ng for three years. 1500, period. If i knew i'd waste so much TIME and money with the nissan, i'd have stumped up some more to get me a "proper" car.

I'm not having any illusions about getting a perfect car for 900 quid, but this is ridiculous. I was expecting to spend up to 500 pounds to get it up to scratch and on the road, which didnt materialize. Now thinking either returning (if possible at all) or selling at a huge loss...

I dont think you're getting any issues i wouldnt expect from a £900 car.

Do it yourself. It isn't hard.

Get a cheap multimeter and test for 12V at the plug leading to the heater element, with the switch on. It'll be hidden behind the headlining somewhere.

Maybe the recirculation control is broken. Or maybe the vents are full of water. Maybe the carpets and seats are damp.

They're completely different engines with different drivetrains.

You had the chance to test it. You didn't notice these problems. Frankly, you're the twit.

You're comparing a £900 car with a £1500 car (2/3rds more expensive), you're comparing an older nissan diesel with an older peugeot diesel (no comparison in my book).
Has the interior been steam cleaned (wet cleaned with a Karcher), if so, and it hasn't dried out properly you will get condensation inside until it dries out properly.
