Did the mechanic friend not even check the oil before he took it on a test drive? I would probably have noticed the dipstick missing then, and if it hasn't been replace how does OP know the oil is black?
The OP reports; " The oil measure thingy " breaking.
So I assumed it happened since purchase.0 -

Whilst it's a private sale and you have no come back on the seller.
If your friend is a qualified mechanic and someone who's opinion could be trusted then you can sue him as you relied on his opinion.0 -
sounds to me at most the car has a leak into the interior
so get down and start feeling for damp carpets
if no joy get a friend to hose the car down as you sit inside looking for leaks
oil measure thingy? do you mean a sensor that displays to the dash?
vibration? get the wheels balanced
my present car is an 02 plate C5 on high miles. bought fro £800 mearly a year ago
sailed its MOT and so far has only had a faulty coil pack.
needs 2 tyres soon.
it does have a sticky back door lock, chipped windscreen, rattle around the exhaust to be found and loose door bin.
if you buy a banger and this is banger money then you need to accept the luck of the draw0 -
This is the risk you take with private sales. You're using phrases like fit for purpose - simply not relevant when you buy off an individual (in a legal sense - morally is another matter but doesn't stand up in court!).
If your mate's a mechanic and feeling guilty, see if he'll do you a discount on the repairs needed.
Next time, buy from a dealer and get a warranty. Most will be persuaded to give you a month, some will give you three. But, you'll pay more for the same car than you would privately. You get what you pay for.0 -
Who sells a banger that has nothing wrong with it?0
