If I offered a customer say, 4000 for their PX, they usually say "Oh well I've seen them in Autotrader for 5500". So I then say "Well feel free to adverttise it yourself and get the best possible price for it, cutting out the middleman...". They usually reply with "Oh I can't be doing with all the hassle and tyre kickers..."

I refrain from saying "No, neither can I..."

I had a 3 series advertised at 8995 a few weeks ago. This bloke from London phoned affering me 8000. So I told him firmly no and went on to tell him that if he finds the same car for 8000 could he buy me one too!

Orrrrrrrrrrr if a customer has come from somewhere like over 100 miles away and they want money knocking off, I ask them "So you've come all that way cos my car is expensive...?"

    But that wasnt autotrader.

That dealer lost a sale straight away because of his attempt to take the !!!! on the trade in. Yes he is to get a good deal but offering 1500-2000 under is more than that.

In the end we bought his car from another part of the franchise who didnt do that. I'd have loved to see his face as they showed up to take the car away :)

And out of the mouth od babes etc!

Dealer : So any idea what its worth or what you want?
Us : No (we did really but wanted to see)
    Dealer : Ok I'll give you 4k

So you admin you lied. IF perhaps you had said that, as I did yesterday with my Megane, 'Actually I know that it's worth X' a dealer will appreciate that at least he has a figure to work to, rather than a lie.

  • Customer: Whats my car worth?
Us scumbag dealers: Well i'd rather see it, really.
    Customer: Roughly then...?
Us scumbag dealers: I really would need to see it...
Customer: Ballpark figure...? I wont hold you to it.
Us scumbag dealer: A range of 1000 - 4000 then.

    Or:

Whats it worth against that car, Oh OK, what about that one, Oh OK, what about that one etc etc etc.

An example of a recent conversation

Dealer : So any idea what its worth or what you want?
Us : No (we did really but wanted to see)
    Dealer : Ok I'll give you 4k
Us: Well its actually worth book 6k clean
Dealer : Ok I will give you 5.5k for it.

When this is the sort of behaviour they come out with is it any wonder they get a bad press. Unless you know exactly what your car is worth etc they screw you.

Don't get me started on warranties and service plans. Apparently a 2 year service plan worth £300 was a good deal on a car which had service intervals of 18k and would be lucky to need 1 in 2 years.

Ultimately they want the best deal for themselves its their living, they are not a charity. If you accepted £4k it is good profit which is what its about(companies dont plan on breaking even or at a loss:rolleyes:).
You obviously know what your car is worth but even then what its worth to you and what its worth to the garage will be different.Customers more often than not over value the part ex and under value the new car, dealers will probably do the opposite. As long as everyone is happy at whatever deal is done then no problem:D
 Am thinking of a new one:beer:

Genuine example. Young girl comes in driving a 98 Puma in baby pink. My boss just looked at me, winked and walked off leaving me to it. Luckily she knew which car she wanted and then asked the dreaded 'whats my car worth' followed by 'my boyfriend is a car sprayer and he did the car for me, it only cost £1700 to paint.......................'. I started coughing a little bit at thit so asked 'what do YOU think its worth against your car?', the answer '£4000' and this was in June this year. My boss told me that I would be driving it home if we traded it in..............git. Anyway the car was pink, but only on the front of the panels, they were all silver underneath. We told her it was worth about £400 and funnily enough didnt see her again...........
