I see this from both sides as I have now 'retired' from my part time car selling! I have just tried selling our 2006 Renault Megane Diesel Cabriolet and the FUN I have had trying to do this! I stated in the ebay ad that Renault had offered us £8100 for it (genuinely) and that the reserve was a lot less (£800 less) as this is what I felt it was worth TRADE (as this would go on a forecourt for £8990).
First call - 'will you take £3500 for it, I will take it off your hands for that' phone goes down.....
Second call - (obviously a trader) - 'I see it at £5000 and can collect today' phone goes down......
Third call - (from a BME) - 'I give you £4000 mate, good deal' phone goes down.....
Now I'm not against people bartering or trying to get a good deal. But this model at this age is a 'good news' straight car and people taking the urine really, really get my goat.
So, we have decided to trade it in and get £8100 for it!'Just because its on the internet don't believe it 100%'. Abraham Lincoln.

This is my main pet hate, people who make silly offers over the phone without viewing the car, it's bad enough when they come to see a car and pick it to bit's as though you're an idiot but when they try to do it without viewing it makes my blood boil.
We once had someone look at a mint Honda prelude, photo in autotrader, proper description etc., came to view couldn't find one fault and decided not to buy because it wasn't red!! and it would cost too much to have it resprayed!! Never once did we hide the fact that it was metallic grey.

another case of idiots
another time a youngish lad came to look at a multipla, well he was there for about half an hour, windows up windows down/roof open roof shut at least 5 times on each one, seats up seats down etc,now this was up for £1100 with 12 mths mot 4 mths tax, then tried to bid me £500,
told him his wife was uglier than the car:eek: and to b@gger off and annoy someone else, next day he had the cheek to phone back and offer £550:mad:IMOJACAR

Car dealers especially self employed ones take a lot of cr*p from people.
They are trying to make a living like everyone else and will have their own money tied up in the cars. They get people complaining about the slightest mark, trolley dent etc and try to knock a fortune off the price. If people want a brand new car they should buy one and not expect second hand ones to be 'out of the box'.
A lot of people havent got a clue when they look for a car and are more bothered about cd player etc than checking the engine. If people had the cars checked properly and went on decent test drives possible problems could be realised before the deal is done, rather than spending too little time on it then going back full of hell which would get anyones back up.
Dealers probably take more flack than any other profession, yes there are some dodgy ones but there are a lot of good ones.:D:beer: Am thinking of a new one:beer:0 -

Surely a " decent " dealer should have made all of the checks and rectified them before actually offering the vehicle for sale.:rolleyes:0 -

most of us do,BUT,some problems that occur can be unknown at the time like head gaskets, cambelts etc,if I am selling a cheapie and the radio doesnt work I am not going to spend hours fixing it, I will just tell them it doesnt workIMOJACAR

If people owned a car from new for example then a few years down the line things started to go wrong it would be seen as expected to happen for the age/mileage.Just because someone buys a used car doesnt mean the same problems are not going to happen.
Not everyone can see into the future:rolleyes::beer: Am thinking of a new one:beer:0 -

MOST people trading cars in need a lesson in honesty too. I know that my ex colleague is thinking of making people sign a waiver statin that they are financially responsible for any any faults on the car for 30 days from sale. Now I know that this is probably illegal BUT I think it will probably scare a few people into being a bit more honest about their trade ins. Isnt it funny that people expect to take your car out for 45 minutes and pull it apart (verbally) but wont let you do the same............'Just because its on the internet don't believe it 100%'. I agree with yer collegue!!
I like valuing Fords, specially when I ask the customer if it has service history and they say "Oh yes, I've done it my self...". So my next question is "Open the bonnet and start it up please..."
Then I wait for them to fumble around looking for the bonnet release...0
