Or my other favourite a guy turns up in a rover 75 a few weeks ago, W Reg in doom gold, boggo 1.8 with 125K on the clock, 6 owners, no history, owned it for 5-6 months, paid £2800 for it (shows me bill) and wants that for it, my comment......'I dont think that, at this time, we can do a deal, but thanks'.

A lot of dealers would agree to put any problems right when the deal was done otherwise it would be a waste of money if the car didnt sell/went to auction..

But that is the catch 22, it may surprise you to know that a lot of dealers say one thing, and do something else, or more importantly, don't do anything that they promise.

Yes you are right it is catch 22,m much like 'I promise you I will call you' after taking a massive test drive or 'I wont leave a deposit but I promise you I want it' etc etc.

Forgive the jaded attitude, but both sides can have an equal poke at each other!

As Harveybobbles stated we wouldnt normally get anything fixed until a deal was struck as it is not a financially good idea to do that.

When the sun goes down it's all about profit, where I worked we worked on about £1000 clear profit after everything was taken into account and the customer was satisfied. Sometimes it came in at a lot less than that, very occasionally more. But if we sold enough vehicles it was a worthwhile excercise. Now £1000 might seem a lot but on an average £10000 car its 10% which is a lot less than say M&S! I suppose its just that buying a car is a very emotive subject!

I only use car dealers and garages that are chrisitians. Ask at your local church for advice

An example of a recent conversation

Dealer : So any idea what its worth or what you want?
Us : No (we did really but wanted to see)
    Dealer : Ok I'll give you 4k
Us: Well its actually worth book 6k clean
Dealer : Ok I will give you 5.5k for it.

When this is the sort of behaviour they come out with is it any wonder they get a bad press. Unless you know exactly what your car is worth etc they screw you.

Don't get me started on warranties and service plans. Apparently a 2 year service plan worth £300 was a good deal on a car which had service intervals of 18k and would be lucky to need 1 in 2 years.

If I offered a customer say, 4000 for their PX, they usually say "Oh well I've seen them in Autotrader for 5500". So I then say "Well feel free to adverttise it yourself and get the best possible price for it, cutting out the middleman...". They usually reply with "Oh I can't be doing with all the hassle and tyre kickers..."

I refrain from saying "No, neither can I..."

I had a 3 series advertised at 8995 a few weeks ago. This bloke from London phoned affering me 8000. So I told him firmly no and went on to tell him that if he finds the same car for 8000 could he buy me one too!

Orrrrrrrrrrr if a customer has come from somewhere like over 100 miles away and they want money knocking off, I ask them "So you've come all that way cos my car is expensive...?"
