  • I would suggest that when an employee works overtime while in the 40% tax bracket. That the employer pay the higher tax, rather than the employee. This will encourage the employer to employ extra staff.

That in all cases of tax & benefits, both husband & wifes combined salaries are taken into account.
  • the number of years at university could be halved and the debt levels drastically reduced if holidays for university students was more in line with normal employee holidays. They are supposed to be getting ready to go to work and therefore do not require the holidays of school children. I am sure that a 3 year course could be completed in 18 months. Having spoken to many students who are only doing 1 or 2 subjects the majority of the time they have nothing to do.
  • Jack wants to work making Jill a new garden wall, Jill wants to work making Jack new clothes. And both will work for Bill in return for the supplies, and all will pay taxes if they had the chance.

    So what's stopping them?
  • Currently we are paying £119 million per day interest charges because of excessive national debt of around a trillion pounds. Pass legislation that restricts the national debt to a maximum of, say, £250 billion, or a figure of perhaps 2.5 times GDP for all governments so we never mortgage the nation's future again. Similar to the 2.5 times earnings that used to be allowed as a mortgage figure.
  • A review of the car mileage allowance within the tax system is way overdue, please, in the wake of recent fuel price increases.
  • Fair prices for mobile calls to government and utility companies

Back the CAB's 'hung up' campaign and move all government 0845, 0870, 0800 etc numbers to 0300 to stop the extortionate cost from calling from mobile phones, which is the only option for many people. Pressure mobile phone companies to charge 0845 as it was originally intended to be - the cost of a local call.
  • If us baby-boomers have to fund our own care in old age, we need better equity release offers for our homes. Banks will not provide without stick so why not require banks who had to be bailed out to provide low-interest equity release plans. If they don't do it, require a much higher capital guarantee to make the pips squeak. This applies to other sorts of social financing too.
  • Have payments paid into an account with debit card instead of cash. This would stop the number of lost cheques, cash that occurs and allow the governent to control what is NOT bought ie drink, drugs, cigarettes etc prevnting the social prolems that occur as a result.
  • Currently a family where parents earn £20k each will pay a lot less tax than one where one partner doesn't earn and the other earns £40k. This is unfair. Allowing families to share allowances will do more for family stability than married couples allowance.
  • Make mobile phone contracts fairer and less confusing
Mobile phone companies are preying on people's stupidity with confusing deals offered at 'only' £30/month for 24 months while resellers are stinging the poor and vulnerable by conning them with 'cashback' deals. Work towards banning or at least a meaningful code of practice on 'bundling' and force sellers to show the total price (not the monthly cost) of 'deals' next to the adverts, boldest, biggest and first.
