  • Change VAT classification on clothing to Non-designer brands are VAT-exempt and Designer brands are VATable.

    Clothing is essential for everyone.
  • Following on from #1175, school uniforms should be VAT free to parents to purchase.

If schools accept supermarket branded items for pupils to wear because of a generic uniform policy (i.e. colours and styles), then no VAT.
If schools insist on certain shops as suppliers, then the school pays VAT (not the parents).
  • Invaluable work is done by charities, meeting needs left by shortage of social workers. Stop local authorities cutting funding for charities.
Make local authorities save money, instead, by shelving twinning activities and all receptions, catering and meals allowances.
Relocate staff. Sell valuable town centre offices. Move offices out of town.
  • New cars should have a mandatory MPG display as part of the dashboard set-up. It should always be visible with the other "clocks", ie speedo, fuel, temperature etc, and it should be separate from any onboard computer interface. It should show the current MPG over say 30 seconds - not the journey or trip average.

I found that having a current MPG display on my onboard has made me much more fuel conscious and has changed my driving habits to be more economical. Having it tell you that speeding away from lights drops you to 5 MPG or that 90mph used twice as much fuel as 60mph was a shock !! :)

'Don't Worry, You Don't Have to Do Anything, You're With us for another Year' trap.

"And if you don't want to be trapped then phone this premium number where we will keep you talking for 10 minutes or more trying to sell you the deal."

It's just wrong on so many levels - especially when you haven't opted for automatic renewal but the company acts as though you have. (Post Office Insurance took nearly £300 from my account despite the tick in the box to say 'no thanks' - I kept a copy of the agreement!) I resented the time, trouble and expense of getting my money back and the fact that my account so seriously close to being overdrawn that I couldn't do a weekend shop. It took nearly 10 days for the money to be returned. Apparently it was my fault - I should have phoned them as well as opting out!

I have to be particularly vigilant when my elderly parents' insurances, boiler cover, breakdown cover etc are up for renewal - and it's just not right. They get really confused by some notices - thinking that they've been locked into the contract for evermore - and they get stressed by the whole palaver of dealing with call centres to put things right. End it, please.

All vehicles coming into the country must buy a clearly displayed road permit for visit period (4 weeks to six months) and produce valid insurance and MOTequivalent to cover that period. Any vehicle remaining in country after permit expires must be re-registered in UK and taxed, insured and MOT'd under our laws. End the un-taxed, un-insured un-road-legal foreign cars running around on our roads.

..and they should be held accountable for any driving misdemeanours such as speeding, red light cameras and parking tickets as they leave the country. A small HMRC database that could be updated quickly by registered penalty providers just for cars with foreign plates would possibly be all that was required.

The first 4 weeks should be free/cheap otherwise it discourages holidaymakers, but they should still have to show insurance and road-worthy-ness at point of entry.

i have worked since i was 17 and in 2009 i became my mum's full time carer and receive no carer's allowance cos i work full time. Even reducing my hours i wont be able to meet current long term financial commitments. I also believe it should be paid to pensioner who look after sick people too. My mum didnt get it when my dad had cancer and he died in 2007. Yet the continue to say yes to RBS bonuses etc.

In adddition this should be paid to those over retirement age.

To reduce the staggering waste of perfectly good food thrown out by the supermarkets, food labelling regulations should be reviewed.

Use By dates on fresh food, for example, just because they are packaged, is a nonsense and results in an excuse for supermarkets to destroy perfectly good food and maintain inflated prices to cover their losses.
  • What part of "50 words" don't people understand. I posted my idea in 50 words. It sounded better when it was 250 words and it took a long time to reduce the post down to 50, as per Martin's request.

Stop banks cynically abusing customers by deliberately making access to interest rates an endurance test. Make it a legal requirement to display the prevailing interest rate on every statement whether online or on paper.
