can anyone help with this paypal dispute?

Long story so please bear with me

I sold a huge wooden train track on ebay and seller got a bargain over £250 worth of thomas track for £50. It was really heavy but somebody took intrest and I agreed for her to arrange own postage.
Item was shipped off and I got an email saying the box was damaged in transit. I told her although it was a thomas box it was only the packaging and wasnt included in the price of goods but she still said she want to claim off DHL.
That was that then got another email saying an item was missing- I didnt have it in the house but would double check. She then filed a claim wanting a £10 refund for the missing item and I refused. Paypal changed it to a dispute so I decided to offer a full refund once I had the goods.
Got an email from paypal saying the buyer had issued them a tracking number for the goods and they would release their funds to the buyer once I had the tracked parcel.
So imagine my suprise when the tracked item turns up- not £250 worth of track I sent but a £1 letter from the woman asking where her item is. Rang paypal today and they said I need to email paypal because this woman will get a full refund once tracked item is at my house grrrrrr I emailed paypal who sent an automated email saying ring them.
Any ideas how to solve this without being taking for a mug:confused:

Thanks Chester

You are probably going to get fleeced here.

But keep envelope you have received back as evidence etc. Call paypal and talk to them don't let this lie.

Hopefully someone will be along better equipped to help you

    Good Luck

And if you loose out to PayPal don't get mean get even....;)

Can't paypal check the weight of the item you sent and compare it to the weight of what she sent using the tracking numbers? I vaguely remember hearing something along those lines.

Failing that, send her a letter by recorded post saying if the item isn't returned inside x days, or the dispute closed before any funds can be transferred, you'll contact the small claims courts. That might make her think twice about screwing you...

The postage paid on the letter will be far less than what would have been paid for returning the item. Take a photo of it showing the tracking number and the envelope. Then phone paypal explaining the situation and offer to email them a copy of the photo. You need to be very proactive here. Keep in constant contact with paypal email and phone them constantly.
  • Thanks everyone, have emailed paypal 3 times already but all times they said I needed to phone, phoned once and spoke to a man who I couldnt really understand but he said I needed to email paypal. I really dont want her to win, I have scanned the letter and envelope which has her postal code postage amount etc on just need to find an address to send it too.

Sometimes with Paypal it depends who you get on the phone so keep trying. Also any phone conversation follow up with an email confirming what was said
  • Yes as cyberbob said keep phoning! I've had to phone 4 times regarding one dispute before someone finally knew what they were talking about and helped me resolve the problem. Don't let it lie at all!

In some disputes on PayPal there is an option to attach files, perhaps you could upload the scan of the letter she sent onto there?

You could fax the envelope to them with the dispute number on it.
  • Personally if this happened to me I would be contacting the local Police, this is a scam, and a well thought out one in my opinion.

A couple of Police officers on her doorstep will soon make her change her mind, there is a real possibility this isn't her first foray into scamming people and the local Police may be aware of her.
  • The thought had crossed my mind regarding the police afterall it is fraud, once or if she gets a refund she is also in possession of my goods.
  • Well she won, informed police, gave paypal a crime report number and they decide to vote in her favour thanks to paypal she has £200 worth of train track (which she is now floggin on ebay as we speak) and has the £52 she paid for it back.
    Crime apparently does pay :(
